I'm at the point in life that I have zero interest in going out St. Patrick's Day weekend, especially in Boston. It's typically far too much mandatory drinking and enforced fun which leads to stupid fights and dodging rivers of vomit. For me to go out on the Saturday before St. Patrick's Day, it has to be something I really want to do. This year was one of those times with the release show for the latest album from Oh the Humanity! with ONE FALL, Little Low, and SkyTigers joining them. First up for the night of punk was SkyTigers. This is one of those bands that's kind of hard to categorize us as punk since they're just as metal as they are punk. SkyTigers have an album recorded, and they chose to play as yet unreleased songs for their set. Judging by what they played, this new album is going to be epic. Boston's melodic punk rockers Oh the Humanity! have released another single before their upcoming album is released in January. "Upper Riffspiratory Infection," which may be a favorite song title in a while, is a hard and fast punk track that's equally as melodic. The music comes at you much faster than the vocals, but Oh the Humanity! make that work. Plus, as the title suggests, the song is quite riff heavy. It's that perfect mix of punk and thrash that is what we love about the band. You get hard and fast music, shout along gang vocals, riffs that would sound at home in an 80's metal song, and more melody than should be possible in such a song, all crammed into under three minutes. There's just something about punk bands that add in some thrashy metal that just works for me. That's where Oh the Humanity! come in. The Boston band have been around since 2012, and their latest single, "Gutted," starts off as a melodic punk track. It's a driving track with shout along choruses and is surprisingly catchy. And then the metal guitars kick in. It's a very slow process, but as the guitar edges into metal more and more, the song just gets cooler and more fun. The song as all of the serious side of punk, especially heavy punk, but the fun of noodling heavy metal. "Gutted" is quite simply a great song that exists in both the worlds of punk and metal without blurring the lines at all. Massachusetts based punk band OH THE HUMANITY! have been kicking around for ten years now. Just before making the trek down to Florida for The Fest, the five piece have released a new single. "Worth Nothing" is a fast and thrashy skate punk track that is almost too catchy. According to the press release, the song is "... a sharp political punk anthem about the soul crushing day to day of consumerism and capitalism." A little warning about the song: You're basically guaranteed to be walking around singing the chorus of "You keep telling us we're worth nothing / You're killing us / Killing us killing us killing us slowly" for the next few days, so if you don't work remotely, be careful with that one. Massachusetts based OH THE HUMANITY! are following up their 2021 album with a new single. "Blues" falls into the melodic hardcore category. I'm tempted to call "Blues" pop punk, but it doesn't quite go far enough into the world of pop. It's too fast and heavy of a song despite how ridiculously catchy and tuneful it is. The song seems to careen out of control with OH THE HUMANITY! struggling to keep it under control with harmonies. It just charges straight ahead sonically with gang vocals and pounding drums.
