Orchestra Gold - "Dakan"

Image
Photo by Ginger Fierstein Afro psych-rock band Orchestra Gold have a new single out, and while their recent singles have been more rock based, "Dakan" ups that even more. "Dakan" is a hard rocking psychedelic single that grooves just as hard as it rocks. This one goes far past the whole world music label, and is going to appeal to anyone that likes psychedelic hard rock, and if you also happen to love West African traditional music, it's all a bonus. "Dakan" isn't exactly at the mosh friendly level of heavy music, but it's not all that far off. Orchestra Gold are the kind of band that could have huge crossover appeal, and a song like this shows exactly why. Singer Mariam Diakite says of the band's latest single: " 'Dakan'  is a Bambara word from Mali, translating to 'destiny' or 'fate,' and also implying a shared purpose. This concept inspired the title of our album after I wrote a song by the same name. often, ...

Orchestra Gold - "Diyanye Ko Te Sa"

Image
Photo by Ginger Fierstein The latest from African psych-rock band Orchestra Gold sees the band diving into the psychedelic side of their sound. "Diyanye Ko Te Sa" has an amazing guitar sound that is going to win you over immediately. It takes over a minute before Mariam Diakite's vocals kick in, and you'll be fully invested in the song before. Once Diakite starts singing, you'll be completely mesmerized. Orchestra Gold have always mixed West African traditional music and psychedelic rock, but "Diyanye Ko Te Sa" steps up the mix, and grooves even harder than it rocks. By the time the song gets to the halfway point, it's like an amped up Parliament/Funkadelic. It's going to be nearly impossible to sit still while "Diyanye Ko Te Sa" plays, but why would you want to? Mariam Diakite says of her band's latest single: "In a culture that floods us with choices and rewards our base impulses, this song is a sacred pause. A moment to ask ...

Orchestra Gold - "Baye Ass N'Diaye"

Image
Photo by Ginger Fierstein Afro psych rockers Orchestra Gold have a new single out that you're going to want to check out. "Baye Ass N'Diaye" is a gloriously psychedelic rock song that grooves impossibly hard. A rock song doesn't typically have this much funk in it, but that's what Orchestra Gold do best. It's hard picking out a favorite part of "Baye Ass N'Diaye." Marian Diakite's vocals are an obvious highlight and are what will draw you into the song. But there's also a gritty guitar that's irresistible, and an incendiary horn section. This is an impossible to resist song, but why would you even try? You're almost guaranteed to be rocking this one all weekend. You can listen to "Baye Ass N'Diaye" below. Dakan is due out later this Fall. For more on Orchestra Gold, check out the band's website .

Orchestra Gold - "Keleya (Jealousy)"

Image
Photo by Ginger Fierstein Orchestra Gold are an Oakland, CA based ensemble that combine traditional Malian music with African psychedelic rock. Their latest single, "Keleya (Jealousy)," combines brass horns along with cosmic guitar licks to a hypnotic effect. The entire song is this swirling whirlwind of a song that takes time to truly let the horns, guitar, and Mariam Diakite's vocals all take the spotlight at various times. The drums tend to stay in the background, holding the entire song together throughout. This is the kind of music you can truly get lost in. Even if you try to let it play out in the background, you'll soon find yourself completely sucked in and focusing on nothing but the song. You can listen to "Keleya (Jealousy)" below. Medicine is due out January 20. For more on Orchestra Gold, check out the band's website .
