Font - "Texas"

Image
Photo by Pooneh Ghana Austin, TX's Font stay very local with their latest single. "Texas" was inspired by the Kerr County floods in 2025 and 2026. The song is a melodic and heartbreaking track that is quietly beautiful. The song is almost painfully quiet with electronic elements that help propel the song and suck in a listener. Even without knowing that "Texas" is about floods that killed well over one hundred people, the pain in the song is evident. It's not all gloom in their latest, though, as Font have added just enough hope in the song to keep it from being too painful for the average listener. It's been a few years since we last brought you anything new from Font, and we're thrilled to have them back. Thom Waddil says of his band's latest song: “Pretty much everyone I know from home was just one or two degrees away from someone who lost a loved one in the flood. So the state was on our minds when we came up with the initial idea together in...

Font - "It"

Image
Photo by Blake Nelson We just discovered Font when they opened for CHAI earlier this month , so we're thrilled to finally have some music from them to share. Their new single, "It," showcases what made their show great. It's a bizarre punk song that's as electronic as it is rock. The song has an intense groove and beat that threatens to make it a dance track, but it just rocks a little too hard for that. Of course, if your definitions of rock or punk are stringent, Font won't fit into either of those categories for you. But what's more punk than just ignoring all the rules of the genre? Especially when you do it in such a unique and compelling way? "It" is a song filled with dance beats, synths, and samples, and is still one of the best noise punk songs of the year. You can listen to "It" below. The single is out now via Acrophase Records. For more on Font, check out the band on Instagram and Bandcamp .

Live Shows: CHAI and Font, Crystal Ballroom at Somerville Theater, Somerville, MA 10/8/23

Photo by Ken Sears I'm fairly new to the world of CHAI fandom, but I had been hearing great things about their live shows. Mainly that they're a blast, and this has been a year of going to see bands just for the fun factor, so I knew I had to check out CHAI when they swung through Boston on their current tour. Their music is much more pop oriented than I normally go to see, so I was unsure what to expect. What I got was an evening of unexpected pure joy. CHAI are a nearly impossible band to describe. They're a band of four Japanese women who wear matching outfits and do low key costume changes throughout the show (mostly something like removing a jacket or mask at the same time.) For some pop songs all four members were singing and dancing a choreographed routine, for others they were thrashing out on instruments in a punk frenzy. I've seen CHAI labelled indie rock, I've seen them labelled pop, but live they are this joyous amalgam of genres that should never be pla...
