Muzzins - "We Can Be Together"

Image
In the past three years, Muzzins have hopped from genre to genre, incorporating elements of alt-rock, punk, jazz, hip hop, electroclash, R&B, funk, etc. in their music. The Boston band are masters of incorporating multiple sounds in songs, and their latest sees them pushing their boundaries even further. "We Can Be Together" is the most electronic song they've released so far. The song lives in the world between a rave and the chill out room at a rave, while also incorporating elements of indie rock in the song. "We Can Be Together" sounds like Radiohead's more electronic songs, but if they decided to be a party band and not change the world. If it wasn't fun, it wouldn't be Muzzins. You can watch the video for "We Can Be Together" below. The song is currently available through Bandcamp . For more on Muzzins, check out the band's website .

Muzzins - "You Told On Yourself"

Image
Ever since I discovered Muzzins in 2021, I've used many genres to describe their songs. I've described them as alt-rock, punk, jazz, hip hop, electroclash, indie rock, tropicalia, etc., but none of that prepared me for their latest single. Instead of a crazy mash-up style track, "You Told On Yourself" is a straight up R&B meets funk jam. This is the first single Muzzins has released that focuses on R-Muzz's vocals. The song starts off as a slinky and seductive R&B song, with R-Muzz crooning in the a standard love song style. For the chorus, the band kicks in doing their very best Parliament/Funkadelic funk jam. Sometimes the most surprising thing a band can do is release a simple and fantastic song. You can listen to "You Told On Yourself" below. The song is currently available via Bandcamp . Let's Rock Cancer is this Saturday!

Image
December is an incredibly busy month for all of us. It's hard to make time for live music or nights out with all of the obligations, family time, etc. Normally we wouldn't implore you to go out on a Saturday night in mid-December, but this Saturday is an exception. First, Let's Rock Cancer is a great cause and is benefitting The Cancer Care Equity Center at Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Second, the line up is amazing. You get the vintage garage rock of Muck & The Mires, Vapors of Morphine keeping the spirit of Morphine alive, the killer power pop of The Chelsea Curve, the eclectic weirdo sound of Muzzins, the fusion sound of The Ray Liriano Experience, and cover band Uncivil Servants. Plus, Henry Santoro of WGBH (and ex-WFNX) is the MC for the evening. The whole thing goes down this Saturday night at Crystal Ballroom at Somerville Theater, with tickets starting at $25. For more information on Let's Rock Cancer and to buy tickets, head on over to the Crystal Ballroom...

Live Shows: Perennial, Miracle Blood, and Muzzins, Deep Thoughts JP, Boston, MA 8/24/23

Image
Deep Thoughts is a record store in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston that has hosted a Grateful Dead night on Fridays in their used book basement, and recently started to have more indie rock shows every so often. It's a great space, albeit one with Dead logos all over the place and the distraction of wanting to look at books everywhere. This past Thursday, they hosted three bands with little in common besides all three being trios: Perennial, Miracle Blood, and Muzzins. It ended up being a perfect mixture of styles for the night. Muzzins opened the evening with their completely unique blend of electronic music, hip hop, jazz, indie rock, punk, and whatever else they feel like throwing in that day. This is the fifth or so time I've seen Muzzins in the past year, and it's always a completely different show. The songs may be the same, but since they are mostly improvised, it's always a different interpretation. "Smoke This" (I think that's the song ti...

Muzzins - "Didja Miss Me?!"

Image
"Didja Miss Me?!" has been a centerpiece of Muzzins' live show each of the four times I've seen them so far, but seeing how their live show is mostly improvised, it's been different each time I've heard it. The song is finally available as a studio recording, and it's now a fifth version of what might be my favorite of their songs. The lyrics and the killer bass line remain intact, but the studio version has an unexpected aggression to it at points. "Didja Miss Me?!" cycles through some genres, which is what Muzzins tend to do in their songs. This one starts off as a funk jam, morphs into an 80's style stadium rocker (think INXS or Depeche Mode at their peak), eases its way into a slinky electroclash song, crashes into industrial, and switches to a monster dance jam, and ends with some New Age. This one is always one of their most fun songs live, and the recorded one is going to make you buy a ticket next time they swing around. You can liste...

Live Shows: Sleaford Mods and Muzzins, Paradise Rock Club, Boston, MA 4/7/23

Image
Sleaford Mods are one of those bands I just never thought I'd get to see live. I've been a fan for years, but they never seemed to be coming through Boston the rare times they came to the US. Finally, they were set to play The Sinclair in 2020, but... you know. Then they came last spring, and I ended up being able to get in last minute. I assumed that would probably be it for quite a while, but they ended up coming through again this past Friday, so obviously I needed to go. One thing that surprised me when I saw Sleaford Mods at The Sinclair was how mellow the crowd was. After watching countless videos of live sets on YouTube, I expected a fairly rowdy crowd. The Paradise's crowd seemed even more reserved, and was more the PBR sipping, chin stroking crowd. To be fair, the energy coming off the stage didn't seem to be what I expected, either, so I started preparing for a disappointing evening. About halfway through the setlist, the duo broke out the hit song "Mork ...

An Interview with Muzzins (And their new single, "Send It Back")

Image
It's only been eighteen months since Muzzins released their first single, but the Boston band has been riding a whirlwind of buzz since then. This is most likely due to their eclectic and unique sound and captivating live shows. They just released their third single last week, so when the opportunity to interview R-Muzz came up, I couldn't resist. We spoke over Zoom, and a fifteen minute conversation became a thirty minute conversation which flowed in every possible direction. I was only able to ask two questions in that time, but certainly no complaints because it was a wild, meandering ride. Here are some highlights from our talk. On recording: "I almost never record anything anymore. Except for the music we play sometimes, but even that I've become less and less concerned about recording... the more interested I get in the process of being present, completely present with the music as we make it. It's largely improvised." On Muzzins' connection with fan...

Live Shows: Muzztival, Midway Cafe, Jamaica Plain, MA 12/30/22

Image
This seemed to be the year that most cool events were happening before (or early) on New Year's Eve. Possibly the coolest was Muzztival. Hosted by Muzzins, the event took place the night before New Year's Eve and featured a wide variety of entertainment besides bands. The evening featured punk poetry, DJ Lightfoot, a drag performance, and an arts and crafts table in the back of Midway Cafe. Of course, the main event was the performance by Muzzins. Despite having just two singles out, Muzzins are quietly one of the buzziest bands in Boston currently. From the first time I saw them opening for Snapped Ankles way back in March, the band has just gotten better and more engaging. One of the main reasons is just how impossible they are to categorize. Their music is a combination of hip hop, electronic, punk, jazz, indie rock... and just about everything else you can imagine. They are truly a captivating performance, led by singer Rayna Jhaveri. Jhaveri just owns the stage when Muzzin...

Live Shows: Snapped Ankles, Gloin, and Muzzins, Crystal Ballroom at Somerville Theater, Somerville, MA 3/12/22

Image
Crystal Ballroom is a fairly new venue that opened up within the Somerville Theater that seems to be more of a performance space than a live music venue. They've hosted concerts, but also burlesque and other performances. Based on what has been booked there, the promoters seem more concerned with art and quality than just getting a Sublime cover band once a month to sell the place out. This was very apparent on Saturday with the triple bill of Snapped Ankles, Gloin, and Muzzins. We've written about Muzzins before, and they were the main reason I was in attendance for this show. Despite having only two songs out, the band had a pretty die hard fanbase show up for being a brand new band. The three piece led by Rayna Jhaveri were a perfect fit to open this triple bill of oddball bands, with their own sound taking pieces of alt-rock, electronic, funk, hip hop, jazz, and punk into one cohesive sound. Their stage presence belied their relative newness, and they played like a band tha...

Muzzins - "Invisible Wounds"

Image
Way back in September (seriously, how was that only 4 months ago?) we brought you the debut single from Boston's Muzzins. It was an alt-rock song that brought in elements of electronic, funk, and hip hop. The band is back with "Invisible Wounds," which is even harder to categorize. This new single starts off as an electronic/tropicalia jam, and just kind of meanders its way around in its own funky way. It's this chilled out, laid back song that hides some intensity. And then it just breaks out in this bizarre indie rock squall of noise. That seems to break the tension, because when it leaves "Invisible Wounds" is even more laid back and just pure tropicalia. Muzzins are definitely unique, in one of the more interesting ways. You can listen to "Invisible Wounds" below. The song is available as a single via Light of Day Records. Muzzins - "Electromagnetic"

Image
Boston's Muzzins have one of the most unique sounds you're going to hear this year. Fronted by TV chef and dominatrix Rayna Jhaveri (yeah, you read that right...) the band have released the whiplash inducing new single "Electromagnetic." The song starts off like a typical alt-rock song, but within seconds slams into more of an electronic/funk/hip hop hybrid. Throughout its three and a half minute run time, the song cycles through these genres as well as punk and jazz. It sounds like a mash up track, except by the same artist. Somehow, as fast and frantically as "Electromagnetic" changes tempos and genres, it all slows well into the same cohesive composition. You can listen to "Electromagnetic" below. The song is available as a single via Light of Day Records. For more on Muzzins, check out the band's Facebook . They're also playing a show at the Midway Cafe in Jamaica Plain September 11. You can get tickets for that show here .
