Photo by Meredith McKown You kind of expect a song called "Best Lover" to be at least a little mushy, and the latest from David Wax Museum definitely is. But that's part of the charm of the husband/wife duo. They can pull off a song like this and make it endearing. Out of the three songs they've released so far off of their upcoming album, "Best Lover" probably has the most mainstream/crossover appeal, edging fairly far into the pop side of folk pop. There's even a brief hip hop-esque breakdown in the song that is reminiscent of G. Love & Special Sauce. What could have been an overly hokey song ends up being a lot of fun. We're pretty huge fans of David Wax Museum here at If It's Too Loud..., so we're obviously going to be excited that Suz Slezak has a new solo song out. "Take Me" is a gorgeous piano ballad with Slezak displaying more emotion than she ever has before. The song is about the birth of her first child and all of the emotions that involves. It really runs the gamut of every possible emotion, typically within the same line. It's such a beautiful and unique song that I hesitate to truly call it a piano ballad. You all have something very specific in mind when you hear the phrase "piano ballad," and I assure you "Take Me" sounds nothing like that. On a Facebook post, Suz Slezak talks about her new single: "I wrote 'Take Me' as an attempt to accept the circumstances surrounding the birth of my first child. Amongst my fellow moms-to-be, expectations around giving birth loom large, especially the pressure to have a 'natural' birth....

Photo by Tristan Williams You definitely know Suz Slezak from her fifteen years as a member of David Wax Museum, but she's starting to step on on her own with her debut solo single (Not counting her 2015 album of lullabies, Watching the Nighttime Come )! "Beautiful Mess" presents a lot for David Wax Museum fans to love without sounding anything like her other musical project. It's much more pop than we're used to, and more singer/songwriter than traditional folk. That's not to say "Beautiful Mess" is a pop song. There is far too much rock guitar in her along with some indie rock distortion to be a pop song. This is a great showcase for Slezak's songwriting abilities along with a way for her to experiment in other directions than she normally can within David Wax Museum. The song that goes in different directions and just hits all of our sweet spots in one single song. "Equal in the Darkness" might be that type of song from their new album. "Equal in the Darkness" seems like a pretty straightforward folk/pop song. It has beautiful harmonization between David Wax and Suz Slezak. The instrumentation between verses might be even more beautiful. They even throw in verses of "wooo-oooo-ooohs" that will suck you in fully if you somehow weren't before. Photo by Vivian Wang Back in May we brought you a Jam in the Van version of "Uncover the Gold," a brand new song from David Wax Museum's upcoming album. The album version is now available to listen to, and it was worth waiting. This version has a softer feel than the previously heard live performance. Suz Slezak's voice has a particularly trippy feel to it as she vocalizes during instrumental parts of the song. Trippy might be the best way to describe "Uncover the Gold," a song that has the most hypnotizing handclaps of all time. Yes, that is a weird way to describe handclaps, but trust us on that. This continues David Wax Museum's progression from album to album. None of their albums feel like complete departures from the previous album, but they all go off in a different direction just enough to keep their sound evolving and interesting. Photo by  Shantel Mitchell Breen This may not be the official first single off David Wax Museum's highly anticipated new album, but it is a professionally recorded and shot video, so it will do for now. David Wax Museum were recently in Austin (most likely for SXSW) and stopped by for a Jam in the Van session. Of of the songs they recorded is "Uncover the Gold," which will be on their upcoming album. "Uncover the Gold" seems like a standard, mostly mainstream folk song on the surface. And it would be a great song if that's what it is. As you listen to it, you start noticing the horns bring in the Mexican folk they normally do in a David Wax Museum song, but they join in with Suz Slezak's fiddle in an odd almost indie rock noise harmony.
