Katy Pinke & Will Graefe Cover Elliott Smith

Image
Photo by Michael Leviton Art-pop artist Katy Pinke and session guitarist Will Graefe have teamed on an upcoming album that sees them reimagining songs from artists as diverse as Paul Simon, Bobbie Gentry, and SZA. The duo just released a cover of Elliott Smith's "Everything Means Nothing to Me." The cover is just as sparse as the original, and is true to Smith's song while still being completely reworked. Both have an intense intimacy to them, with the biggest change being the original is a piano ballad that morphs into a full band track, and the cover is simply Pinke's vocals and Graefe's guitar. Plus, the new version is more folk-jazz than Smith's. You can listen to Katy Pinke and Will Graefe's version of "Everything Means Nothing to Me" below. Patterns is due out August 29 on Glamour Gowns. Léna Bartels - "Amber"

Image
Photo by Morgan Healani Mein The latest single from Lé na Bartels is an interesting one, to say the least. According to the press release, the Brooklyn-based artist fits into the singer-songwriter, grunge, country-rock, and avant-pop genres, and after hearing "Amber," I certainly can't argue. At times the song is a slightly heavier version of singer-songwriter that you might have heard more of thirty years ago, and at other times it's filled with grunge meets shoegaze guitars and their wall of noise. It's a giant song that still feels intimate, filled with fuzz and feedback that will actually sound comforting and lovely if your brain is wired that way. We're just discovering L é na Bartels, but hopefully this won't be the last we hear from her. You can watch the video for "Amber" below. The single is out now on Glamour Gowns. Katy Pinke - "Syzygy"

Image
Photo by Roeg Cohen Katy Pinke is a Manhattan based singer-songwriter who has a new single coming out this month. The latest single from that album, "Syzygy," is going to be considered alt-folk, although it's pretty close to mainstream folk. It's a simple song that focuses mostly on Pinke's vocals and guitar. It's a stripped down song that was recorded live with a bare minimum of percussion barely audible in the background. This song is stunning in its simplicity, and it always astounds me how certain artists can command a listener's attention with so little. "Syzygy" is impossibly compelling, and you're going to be floored by this one. You can listen to "Syzygy" below. Katy Pinke's self-titled debut album is due out April 23 on Glamour Gowns.
