Millie Milner & The Deadnames are a queer fronted indie-pop band out of Manchester. The band's new single, "lie," is an absolute delight for any fan of the various 90's alt-rock genres. It's speak-singing verses are going to remind you of Blur's "Parklife." From there the song goes on this rambling journey through modern indie pop (the "oooooooohs" are particularly fun) while still delving occasionally into indie rock. At one point the repeated refrain of "I made my bed, I'll lie in it" seems like a reference to Hole's "Miss World." The guitar solos have a fun slacker thing going on that reminds me of Pavement, and maybe a little late period Britpop/post-Britpop of bands like Ocean Colour Scene or Cornershop. When a band describes themselves as "dark punk" and releases a song called "Drowning in Piss," it's fairly safe to assume what that song will sound like. Vancouver's lié are quickly becoming a favorite of mine, and this new song is cementing that. "Drowning in Piss" is a ferocious, swirling punk song that delves deeply into post punk. You've never heard post punk groove this hard while being this dark and heavy. All of this paired with heavy jangly guitar make for an intensely hypnotic mix. Photo via Facebook I've been obsessed with  lié's blend of "cold punk" for a few years now, and I'm always thrilled when I can bring you new music of theirs. Their latest song, "Digging in the Desert," is exactly what I want from  lié: It's ferocious punk, and as loud and noisy as that label can possibly be. But, they're also adding in the groove of post punk, and literally everything about this song is catchy. The guitar swirls as much as it rips, and it's all wrapped up in a spastic concoction that I've been spending all weekend listening to. I've been fairly (ok, ridiculously) obsessed with Vancouver's lié ever since stumbling on them when I saw they were opening for The Dead Milkmen in that area of the continent. Their self described "three piece dark punk" sound just hits me in a sweet spot. Luckily for us, they just released their latest full length, Hounds. Let's attempt to describe lié besides just "dark punk." lié play punk, no question about it. It's an insanely fast, loud version of the genre, which, quite frankly, most punk bands seem to lack these days. But, holy shit is this noisy. It's basically if Bikini Kill and Sonic Youth got angry. Hounds is filled with songs of pure chaos. Usually I love noisy bands like this because they have a controlled sense of chaos, but I don't think lié is completely in control, in all honesty. While "Country Boys" was more tense and never quite erupted the way songs tend to, the new single, "Can't Get Enough," is virtually all explosion. It starts off with 37 seconds of what would be the breakdown in a hardcore song, and then just bursts from there. For the rest of the song's nearly three minutes, it just never lets up the fury. "Can't Get Enough" is noisy chaos that seems barely contained, if it ever truly is. It feels like it's been forever since we've been able to bring you new music from Vancouve r's lié. The self proclaimed dark punk band is back with a new song from their forthcoming album. "Country Boys" may sound like the title of the new single from whoever is popular in mainstream country these days, but with lié it's a noisy and bordering on disturbing burst of music. "Country Boys" is maybe one step away from being an all our rager, but it never quite goes fast enough. Instead, it's a tense song that may trigger your anxiety. And I mean that in a good way. I became fairly obsessed with their album Consent , so I was truly thrilled when I saw they have a new album due next month, along with a new single/video. "Truth" is heavy. Almost metal heavy. lié have discovered this amazing way of mixing gothic punk with thrashy indie rock that is custom made for any fan of heavy music. It's one of the most discordant songs I've heard in years that's not purposefully being experimental. It just is. lié's new album, Truth or Consequences , will be out on August 12 on Monofonus Press. lié are one of those bands you have never heard anything like it before, and you have no idea how that is possible. Hailing out of Vancouver, BC, I only heard about them because they were opening for The Dead Milkmen on a recent West Coast tour. It's dark gothic heavy punk. Imagine straight edge hardcore style punk mixed in with European goth new wave, but it a really melodic way. It's not goth in a "Let's put bats on our merch and wear black eyeliner" way, but just dark. I can't call it catchy, but it's not meant to be. lié take all these elements that have never been mixed together, and especially never like this. It's heavy and groovy all at once. "Saved" just barrels in at this breakneck pace with a chanting call and response gang vocals. If you like any kind of music that is heavy or dark, this will be for you.
