TVOD - "Wet Brain"

Image
Photo by Emmanuel Rosario Brooklyn's TVOD have a new single out, and it's a great one. "Wet Brain" is a post-punk anthem that leans a little bit into pop punk. It's an incredibly catchy track filled with more harmonies than post-punk typically allows. This is a perfect track for either dancing or pogoing, or just singing along as it gets stuck in your head. "Wet Brain" also expertly balances being both discordant and melodic. Not many songs are as fun and aggressive as TVOD's latest, and that helps make the song even more enjoyable. They're one of those bands we're just waiting to explode, and they might by the time their new album is out in October. TVOD say of their latest single: "Slacker idiot anthem that first debuted at SXSW 2025. Inspired by ruining relationships, concurrent hair of the dogs, and wishing you had never said that dumb thing to your now ex. A post-punk tribute to Sixteen Candles." You can watch the video for ...

TVOD - "Rerun"

Image
Photo by Kristin Sollecito TVOD's Party Time was a highlight of 2025, and now the Brooklyn band have returned with new music. "Rerun" is still a great example of modern post-punk, but this time they've injected it with some indie sleaze. This one grooves hard, and adds some unexpected piano stabs into the mix. It's a little less punk than their previous album was, but I can't imagine anyone is going to mind when a band mixes up their sound this well. "Rerun" is going to be an earworm you won't be trying to get rid of, and you might end up disappointed when it finally wears off. TVOD says of their latest single: "Reasons for desperately needing to quit your day job, move away from your hometown, and start a fresh self-destructive spiral. Change the goddamn channel." You can watch the video for "Rerun" below. The Farm is due out October 16 on Mothland, and is available for pre-order here . For more on TVOD, check out the band...

La Sécurité - "Deny"

Image
Photo by Kristin Sollecito Montreal art punk band La Sé curit é  have a new single out, and you're going to end up loving it. "Deny" is a post punk party waiting to happen. It's high energy, and is as electronic as it is punk or rock. This is a song that's going to demand dancing from the listener, the more awkward the better. Despite how electronic and dance friendly that "Deny" is, there is still a cloud of noise hovering over the entire song. The song has an interesting near throwback quality to the 80's when computers were the future and bands started experimenting with computerized noises in their songs to sound more modern. La S é curit é  have very quickly become a favorite of ours, and we can't wait for their new album. The band says of their new single: “ Initially written in French and translated to English, the song deals with dysfunctional relationships and getting rid of burdens in your life. Standing up for yourself. This doesn...

La Sécurité - "Snack City"

Image
Photo by Kristin Sollecito Montreal art-punk collective La Sé curit é  have a brand new single out that we think you're going to love. "Snack City" is a hyperactive and ridiculously fun ode to food. It's more than a little quirky, and if we had to put a label on it we'd go with post-punk, but there is a lot going on in this one. It kind of sounds like Bodega and DEVO jamming on a Weird Al song, which is apparently my new favorite genre of music. "Snack City" is the perfect antidote to the chin-stroking rock snob, because I don't think anyone can resist the party that La S é curit é  have given us with their latest song. Get away from other people for the next three minutes and dance your heart out. We could all use a song like "Snack City" these days. The band says of their latest single: “We wrote the song when we were hungry.  The segment ‘J'ai faim, j'ai faim, [...],’ which translates to: ‘I’m hungry, I’m hungry, [...]’ was the b...

La Sécurité - "Bingo"

Image
Photo by Kristin Sollecito Montreal based art punk collective La Sé curit é  are back with a new single and video. "Bingo" is an absolute blast of a song. It's three and a half minutes of impossible to not dance to music that will most likely land in the post-punk category. It's a fun and quirky song with music that's just as catchy as the vocals. The guitars are fuzzy, but "Bingo" is closer to New Wave than indie rock. This one sounds like a combination of The B-52's, BODEGA, and maybe some Fugazi? La S é curit é  have this almost all-encompassing sound that borrows from many genres to create their very own joyous hodge podge of music. Listening to "Bingo" may very well be the most fun three minutes and thirty-three seconds of your week. The band says of their latest single: “‘Bingo’ was a working title Melissa used to save the demo when we were working on the song.  The lyrics came later following a suggestion from Félix to describe a...

Brainwasher - "At Least It Beats an Actor"

Image
Photo by Blake Studdard Brainwasher is an Oklahoma City based band that includes Matthew Duckworth Kirksey and Tommy McKenzie of The Flaming Lips. The band recently released a new single, "At Least It Beats an Actor," which might be the perfect side project for members of The Flaming Lips. The new single is wonderfully trippy, but in that non-hippie version, and leans heavily into the world of electronic music while keeping rock roots intact. It's a synth heavy song that's relatively laid back, and I might be imagining it, but I'm hearing some Spaghetti Western influences here. You don't typically associate psychedelic or electronic with stripped down, but "At Least It Beats an Actor" is surprisingly stripped down considering the genres involved.  Brainwasher say of their new single: "It’s freakier than a Diddy party, it's louder and wetter than a thunderstorm, more suspenseful than the Golden Gate Bridge, scarier than an El Salvadorian pris...

TVOD - "Pool House"

Image
Photo by Kristin Sollecito Brooklyn post-punks TVOD are back with new music. Their latest single, "Pool House," is a stripped down dance party. As stripped down (by post-punk standards) as the song is, the chorus is an absolute epic. This one is a bunch of fun and has a certain classic punk meets modern punk sound to it. It has the current day fun and dance friendly sound of punk but enough of the classic and vintage attitude to keep punk purists happy. "Pool House" is also heightened by synthesizers and a mellotron, which may not scream "punk" or "rock," but TVOD pull this off impeccably.  TVOD describes the track and video as: “1970’s modern American punk band gets dumped at a pool party.” You can watch the video for "Pool House" below. Party Time is due out May 9 on Mothland, and is available for pre-order here . For more on TVOD, check out the band's website .

Hot Garbage - "Mystery"

Image
Photo by 1upcloud Back in October we brought you "Snooze You Lose," the latest single from Toronto psych-goth band Hot Garbage. Now they're back with "Mystery." I described the previous single as a cross between early Sonic Youth, A Place to Bury Strangers, and The Jesus & Mary Chain. "Mystery" still has the dark shoegaze sound of The Jesus & Mary Chain, but has more of the psychobilly and punk sound of The Cramps. It's a great mixture of sounds perfect for fans of shoegaze, punk, or just dark music in general. I hesitate to call this song fun, but it is in its own way. You can watch the video for "Mystery" below. Precious Dream is due out January 19 on Mothland and Exag' Records, and is available for pre-ordered here . Hot Garbage - "Snooze You Lose"

Image
Photo by 1upcloud Toronto's Hot Garbage released a bombastic new single that is quickly becoming required listening. "Snooze You Lose" is this dark, heavy indie rock song that we're going to describe as psych-goth. It sounds like a cross between early Sonic Youth, A Place to Bury Strangers, and The Jesus & Mary Chain. It's a song that rocks as hard as it grooves, with plenty of drone and pummeling drums. Plus, there's a deep sense of foreboding throughout the entire track. But, "Snooze You Lose" can just work as a heavy rock track, if that's the kind of thing you're into. Hot Garbage says of their new single: "The song is about how time passes when you stand still. Sometimes all you can do is laugh." You can watch the video for "Snooze You Lose" below. Precious Dream is due out January 19 on Mothland and Exag' Records, and is available for pre-order here . For more on Hot Garbage, check out the band on Instagram a...

La Sécurité - "Serpent"

Image
Photo by Aabid Youssef Montreal's  La Sécurité  is an at-punk group that are making impossible to resist post-punk. Their latest single, "Serpent," has this infectious post-punk groove and backbeat paired with some of the most airy disco pop you've heard since Deee-lite. This is the kind of song that is impossible to not want to dance to, even if it's still punk, filled with feedback, and gloriously off-kilter. This isn't a Top 40 style dance song or even a dance punk song. "Serpent" is as addictive as it is ear wormy. It's five and a half minutes long, and you're still going to be desperate for more once it's over. The band says of their new song: “ The person it is directed towards loves dancing. It's a pretty dancy song. We hope they dance to it.” You can watch the video for "Serpent" below. Stay Safe! is due out June 16 on Mothland, and is available for pre-order here . La Sécurité - "Anyway"

Image
Photo by Aabid Youssef Every now and then I make the mistake of reading too much of a press release before listening to a song, and I did that with "Anyway" from  La   Sécurité . The new song from the Montreal art punk band is compared to a mixture of The B-52s and Yeah Yeah Yeahs... and that pretty much nails it. "Anyway" has all of the exuberance of a classic B-52s track mixed with a more modern sound (and some of the darkness of) Yeah Yeah Yeahs. There is a ton of New Wave/post punk groove in this song, and it's the perfect example of a sad song that you're still going to want to dance to, either in spite of or because of the mood. Singer  Éliane Viens-Synnott  says of her band's new song: “This song was written in the early stages of dealing with grief related to miscarriage and pleads a sort of surrender to the strain it can put on a couple processing it.”   You can watch the video for "Anyway" below. Stay Safe! is due out June 16 on Mothl...
