If It's Too Loud...

As I've stated here far too many times, I'll use any excuse to get up to Salem, MA to hang out. Moon Base One, a new all-ages sober space, keeps giving me plenty of reasons to make the trip up, and Thursday night was one of those. As soon as I saw that Little Low and Megan from Work were playing together, I knew I couldn't miss the show. Later, Cape Crush was announced, which just sweetened the deal. I had never heard The Dreaded Laramie before, but they quickly became a favorite during their set. Opening the show Thursday night was Little Low. I discovered the Boston pop punk/emo band back in March playing with Oh the Humanity, SkyTigers, and ONE FALL, which was perfect timing to not miss their excellent album Sunshine Guilt , which was released in May. They play an upbeat version of emo that lands somewhere between the more mainstream, TRL friendly version and the harder edged late 90's style. When I saw Little Low at Faces Brewing Co. last weekend, they played a new single called "Dark Beer Archives" and hinted at a new album. We now know the album is due out in May and we have a studio version of "Dark Beer Archives" to listen to! The song is a fantastic pop punk/emo track that is perfect for elder emos. It has all of the shiny edges and pop hooks of a pop punk track, but before the genre went fully TRL. It's also more along the lines of our favorite 90's Midwest emo bands, but with a Northeast edge to everything. "Dark Beer Archives" is incredibly infectious, and is sure to reach severe earworm levels after a few listens. Not that you'll be complaining at all. You can listen to "Dark Beer Archives" below. I'm at the point in life that I have zero interest in going out St. Patrick's Day weekend, especially in Boston. It's typically far too much mandatory drinking and enforced fun which leads to stupid fights and dodging rivers of vomit. For me to go out on the Saturday before St. Patrick's Day, it has to be something I really want to do. This year was one of those times with the release show for the latest album from Oh the Humanity! with ONE FALL, Little Low, and SkyTigers joining them. First up for the night of punk was SkyTigers. This is one of those bands that's kind of hard to categorize us as punk since they're just as metal as they are punk. SkyTigers have an album recorded, and they chose to play as yet unreleased songs for their set. Judging by what they played, this new album is going to be epic. To benefit Music Organizers of the North Shore (MOON), they've put out a monster thirty three song covers compilation. This is the seventh installment of the Now That's What I Call Heartbreak  series, and this one focuses on songs that were featured in movies. With the compilation featuring thirty three songs and bands, it's impossible to cover the entire thing, but there are some great covers here by tons of bands we love. You get Megan from Work's rendition of Belinda Carlisle's "Heaven is a Place on Earth," Astral Bitch taking on The Psychedelic Furs' "Pretty in Pink," Coffin Salesman with an unexpected version of Kelly Clarkson's "Already Gone," TIFFY taking on The Cardigans' "Lovefool," and many, many more.
