Dearthworms - "Strike Low"

Image
Sheffield based rock band Deathworms are described as both "experimental post-punk" and "wonk-rock," and you can find out what that means when you listen to their latest single. "Strike Low" isn't quite as experimental as experimental post-punk might lead you to believe. It's more like a bizarro and darker sounding version of Yard Act. Dearthworms have a jagged and abrasive sound, although it does sound like they're trying (kind of) to make it sound more palatable. As the song goes on, it just kind of plows through you. It's not exactly out of control, but pretty close to it. Dearthworms say of their new video: “We felt like the best way to present our horniest song was with chaotic live footage and abstract violence. We cannot confirm who or what was under the spade.” You can watch the video for "Strike Low" below. Sapsucker is due out July 26 on Redundant Span Records, and is available for pre-order here . Shangri-Lass - "Father's Daughter"

Image
Photo by Rachel Loomes Shangri-Lass, the new project from Sheffield's Rose Love (bassist of Sister Wives), has a new single out. "Father's Daughter" is a brooding synth pop song that owes it's sound to 60's girl groups as much as 80's synth music. What makes this such an interesting song is that it's dark and foreboding, but it's also a pop song designed to make you groove. It stops just shy of being goth, but just barely. It feels strange to call a song both brooding and fun, but that's what "Father's Daughter" is. The song almost revels in how brooding it is, which is why you're going to love it. Rose Love says of her new song: "The song is a mess of ideas from a messy brain: depression, trying to get through a bad trip, how religious brainwashing never leaves you and then relating to my dad through all of those shared experiences." You can watch the video for "Father's Daughter" below. Over & Ove...

Shangri-Lass - "Parallel"

Image
Photo by Rachel Loomes Shangri-Lass is the solo project of Sister Wives bassist Rose Love. Her debut single is "Parallel," and this one is going to hit a sonic sweet spot for a lot of us. The song has a very 60's sound to it. It combines girl group pop with the grooviness of a spy show theme. But "Parallel" is a dark song. As dark as a girl group song could get thematically, they always had more of a pop shine to take the edge off. Shangri-Lass take that sound and just turn it into a brooding track. This is still a fun song, but expect to get a little grimey listening to it.  Rose Love says of the new song: “Parallel started out as lyrics written years ago at the beginning of a relationship that started intensely and ended badly, leaving emotional carnage in its wake. It’s about loving someone and wanting to help them but ignoring your gut instinct.” You can watch the video for "Parallel" below. Over & Over is due out April 28 on Redundant Span Rec...
