Ken's Best of 2025 - #8: Lady Pills - Renowned in the Roaring Twenties

Image
Lady Pills, the musical project of Boston's Ella Boissonnault, hits this delightful spot between indie rock and pop. Her latest album, Renowned in the Roaring Twenties , is an upbeat album filled with eleven of the catchiest songs of 2025. The songs cover a wide range of sounds, from the pop of "BN2B" to the alt-rock of "Didn't You" to the New Wave of "Out Into the Open" to the dance banger of "Sink the Ship." Lady Pills takes all of these musical styles and blends them into one cohesive sound. All of the songs on Renowned in the Roaring Twenties sound unique but also like they belong together. Plus, you get some of our favorite guest stars with Will Dailey and Sadie Dupuis on songs. This is an album that brought me some true joy this year at times when I needed music to be fun. Songs of note: "BN2B," "Didn't You," "Right Track," and "Sink the Ship"

Lady Pills - "Out Into the Open"

Photo by Sophie Adams We've been raving about every new single from Lady Pills upcoming album, and "Out Into the Open" will be no exception. Ella Boisonnault is a master of merging indie rock with modern pop, and with this new single she moves in some more unexpected directions. The song is almost impossibly catchy and adds a heaping amount of New Wave to the track along with a newly discovered theatricality. "Out Into the Open" feels more like a story than your average single. The song is beautiful and fun as it cycles through different sounds and tempos while always sounding like the same song. Lady Pills seem to be playing with styles like early girl groups, classic indie rock, and musicals on this one, and we are fully onboard.  You can listen to "Out Into the Open" below. Renowned in the Roaring Twenties is due out April 4 and is available for pre-order through Bandcamp . For more on Lady Pills, check out the artist on Facebook and Instagram .

Lady Pills - "Call It (anything but what it is)"

Image
Lady Pills have become one of our favorite artists that skirt the line between indie rock and pop, and the Boston artist has a new single out that perfectly shows off that sound. "Call It (anything but what it is)" is more rooted in the rock side of things than her previous single "Sink the Ship" while still keeping some serious pop hooks intact. It's making me think of Go! era Letters to Cleo, which was much more pop focused than I could have brought myself to admit in 1997. "Call It (anything but what it is)" is still a solid alt-rock track that will burrow itself deep into your subconscious, and you'll be welcoming such a delightful earworm. You can listen to "Call It (anything but what it is)" below. Renowned in the Roaring Twenties is due out April 4, and is available to pre-order here . Lady Pills - "Sink the Ship"

Image
Photo by Sophie Adams Lady Pills has always played along the lines of indie rock and pop music. On her latest single, she blurs the lines even further and has made an indie rock dance banger. "Sink the Ship" has a disco beat that dares you not to dance. Seriously, if you can sit still during this song, you might want to make sure you still have a pulse. But it's still a rock based song, with far too much indie rock guitar to allow "Sink the Ship" to fully be a dance song. Sure, lots of artists have made indie rock dance friendly before, but Lady Pills is doing is slightly differently. Although, as the song goes on it becomes more and more disco based, so it's possible that "Sink the Ship" was designed to make indie rock snobs get into a modern disco jam without realizing it before it was too late. You can listen to "Sink the Ship" below. Renowned in the Roaring Twenties is due out April 4, and is available for pre-order through Bandcamp ....

Lady Pills - "Didn't You"

Photo by Sophie Adams Boston's Lady Pills gets fully into the rock on her latest single. Ella Boisonnault's musical project just released "Didn't You," which is filled with an indie rock meets alt-pop joy. The song is heavy on fuzzy guitars, but is far too catchy to fully be a pure rock song. It's fast and bouncy and is truly a fun listen. This one just has an extra added crunch to it that we're finding delightful. I'm getting some major late 90's flashbacks from when alt-rock started to let in a little bit more pop, like Letters to Cleo's Go! or that dog's Retreat from the Sun. "Didn't You" is a rocker overflowing with pop hooks. In a Facebook post, Lady Pills says of their new single: "This is one of my favs on the upcoming album and I am so proud to share it. I wrote this one in the midst of trying to make sense of a lot of sloppy stuff. I hope it feels supportive and fun and gives you space to do the same " You c...

Lady Pills - "BN2B"

Image
Lady Pills is the musical project of Boston's Ella Boissonnault, and have just released a brand new single. "BN2B," stands for Be Nice to Boys, and it's that slice of alt-rock that has completely merged with alt-pop to the point that you can't quite tell which it is. The guitar in "BN2B" is far too rock to be pop, but it's far too poppy to truly be rock... at least by traditional standards. If you're open minded and don't get overly hung up on genres, you're going to love this one. This one is reminding me of Wholesale Meats and Fish era Letters to Cleo mixed with modern alt-pop, which simply can't be a negative thing. You can listen to "BN2B" below. Renowned in the Roaring Twenties is due out April 4, 2025, and is available for pre-order through Bandcamp . For more on Lady Pills, check out the artist on Facebook and Instagram . Live Shows: Nice, a Fest, Somerville, MA 7/30/22

In its second year, Nice, a Fest took over The Rockwell and Crystal Ballroom at Somerville Theater for three night (four if you count the "after party" on Sunday). I wasn't able to go for all three (or four), so I made it for just Saturday. And seeing how I couldn't pull off twelve hours of live music at my advanced age, I made it a late afternoon/early evening start time. So apologies to all the bands I didn't see! Here are my five favorites from Saturday at Nice, a Fest, in no particular order. Circus Trees This one came out of nowhere for me. Circus Trees are a band out of Marlborough, MA made up of three sisters. Saturday night they had a replacement drummer, and they announced that they would be playing sad music before they started, which, they did. But Circus Trees are hardly a mopey band. Sure, their songs do have mopey parts, but it's more like if shoegaze was really, really heavy as well as beautiful. Their quiet parts were shockingly lovely, but whe...
