If It's Too Loud...

There are roughly a few thousand covers of Prince's beyond classic song "Kiss" out there, but Joan As Police Woman's isn't like any other. It's a complete reworking of the song. Instead of an 80's dance masterpiece, Joan As Police Woman does it as a stripped down indie/folk/soul song. It's as minimal as can be, but still with Prince style vocals. It's an oddly groovy and unique take on the original. It's a must listen. You can listen to Joan As Policewoman's version of "Kiss" below. If you've been following us for any length of time, you know of our undying love of cover songs. You might also know how much of a Chris Brokaw fan I am, and that he's the most underrated musician out there. His work with Come, The New Year, The Lemonheads, and his solo work has cemented himself as one of my all time favorite musicians. Somehow, it also slipped by me that he released an album of David Bowie and Prince covers back in November 2017. The back story is that he was asked to play at a friend's wedding, who requested David Bowie and Prince songs. He came up with versions on a classical guitar, and decided to record them. Instead of completely traditional covers, you get these amazing acoustic, instrumental versions of some of the greatest pop songs ever recorded. Any semi-regular reader of this blog is going to know that we're pretty much obsessed with Lydia Loveless. Since one of my more long term musical obsessions is Prince, I'm beyond thrilled that Loveless is covering "I Would Die 4 U." Last year, Bloodshot Records announced a 21 song Prince tribute album. Apparently lots of people didn't realize it was an April Fool's Day prank, and they were pissed. To make that up to fans, they're releasing a split 7" for Record Store Day this year featuring the aforementioned cover of "I Would Die 4 U" with Cory Branan doing "Under the Cherry Moon." A good week for new releases overall. Let's get right to it. Prince/Prince & 3rd Eye Girl - ART OFFICIAL AGE / PLECTRUMELECTRUM : Prince is back this week with two albums - one on his own, and one with his new side group 3rd Eye Girl. Prince is always interesting enough to give a listen to, but, truth be told, only the 3rd Eye Girl album, PLECTRUMELECTRUM , is something I see myself going back to for more. The releases are not nearly as unmemorable as, say, the new U2 from a few weeks back, but the solo piece certainly doesn't have the same flair to it. Give both a listen, but temper your expectations. Kat Edmonson - The Big Picture : Kat Edmonson's new album continues along the fun, jazzy, classic singer path that she's been on for a while now, but this album is definitely a step ahead for her musically.
