Sister Wives - "YnCanu"

Image
Photo by Laura Merrill I love a good ghost story, and the latest from Sister Wives tells a great one. Sung in Donna Lee's native Welsh, "YnCanu" tells the story of the ghost of the Wylfa Power Station. The spirit is thought to be a New Zealand opera singer named Rosina who you can hear singing throughout the station. The song is a powerfully heavy and sludgy track. "YnCanu" may not be metal, but it is certainly metal adjacent. It's a more melodic version of a band like the Melvins, and is a master class in the loud/quiet/loud thing. Plus, the song, particularly the vocals, have a spooky undertone that I'm finding irresistible.  Sister Wives say of their latest single: " YnCanu is a haunting ballad that weaves together the eerie folklore of ‘Madam Wen’ or ‘White Lady’, a spectral figure forever tied to the rugged cliffs and crashing seas near Cemaes and the imposing Wylfa nuclear power station. The song tells the tragic tale of a woman who either met...

Sister Wives - "Malady"

Image
Photo by Laura Merrill I typically hate lifting a band's description right from their press release, but I can't think of any other way to make you want to listen to the latest from Sister Wives: " Unearthing forgotten feminist histories through myth and landscape, Sister Wives weave wild tales braiding the Welsh and English language over their signature glam-droog-acid- stomp."   The band's latest single, "Malady," is a giant track that mixes the traditional with 70's rock. The song is haunting and exhilarating at the same time. It kind of sounds like if Iron Butterfly and Black Sabbath decided to team up on some folk covers. If "Malady" was released during the Satanic Panic period of the 80's, it would have given plenty of parents heart attacks. According to the band, "Malady" i s about  "an inner ‘beast’ waking up inside your body; backing you up and empowering you to stand up to bad men,"  they share.  "It’s...

Adwaith - "Wedi Blino"

Image
Welsh post punk trio Adwaith are back with a new song that defies the typical post punk label. "Wedi Blino" is more along the pop side of post punk, if such a side exists. This is hardly a pop song, though. "Wedi Blino" is more of a trippy and dreamy track that blends traditional post punk with shoegaze and a little bit of an indie pop filter. This is the kind of song that dances on the line of pop and post punk that you didn't even know existed.  Adwaith says of their new song: "We wanted to create a big indie pop song that has a melancholy feel to it.  It's about being worried that life is going too fast or the worries of a relationship, the overwhelming feeling that you're not good enough and that you are the reason things aren't working out." You can watch the video for "Wedi Blino" below. Bato Mato is due out July 1 on Libertino. For more on Adwaith, check out the band's Facebook and Twitter . Upcoming tour dates are bel...

Tacsidermi - "Gwir"

Image
Photo via Facebook Gwenllian Anthony from Adwaith has been writing music from Matthew Kilgariff (who is a touring member of Adwaith) for a few years. The new project from the two musicians from Wales is Tacsidermi. While their other band has an edgier alt-rock sound, Tacsidermi are more of a laid back, funky, psychedelic band. However, this is hardly a classic 60's psychedelic sound. Their new single, "Gwir," sounds like the early/90's Flaming Lips mixed with The Brian Jonestown Massacre. It starts off incredibly quiet, almost like some sparse quirky folk. And then the groove kicks in, and will make you an instant fan. You can listen to "Gwir" below. The song is available as a single via Libertino Records. For more on Tacsidermi, check out the band on Facebook and Twitter . Libertino · Tacsidermi - Gwir

Los Blancos - "Dilyn Iesu Grist"

Image
Photo by The Shoot According to their press release, Los Blancos are "Welsh psych-punkers." With their new single, "Dilyn Iesu Grist" [English translation: Follow Jesus Christ], that's pretty accurate. The song starts off as this bouncy track that has the fun and trippy aspects of psychedelia but the speed of punk. It's all crashing symbols and swirling, fuzzy as hell guitars. It stops just short of aggression and feels more like a celebration. And then the instrumental finish happens. As much as you're loving the first half of this song, prepare yourself to become completely obsessed once the second half kicks in. Somehow this song is under three minutes long, which will hardly be enough for your needs. You can listen to "Dilyn Iesu Grist" below. Sbwriel Gwyn , the new album from Los Blancos, will be out September 27 on Libertino Records. For more on Los Blancos, check them out on Facebook and Twitter .

Adwaith - "Y Diweddaraf"

Image
Photo by The Shoot Hailing from Carmarthen in South West Wales, Adwaith have this unique sound to their blend of post punk. "Y Diweddaraf" is dark. It's that dark and moody version of post punk you associate with Joy Division. But the weird thing is that it's also upbeat and poppy, while being filled with fuzzy indie rock guitars. And it's sung in their native Welsh. This should be a complete trainwreck of a song, but Adwaith somehow merges it all together seamlessly into a dark, moody, upbeat post punk indie rock pop song. You're going to need to listen to the song to get it. You can listen to "Y Diweddaraf" below. Adwaith's debut album, Melyn , is due out October 12 on Libertino Records.
