Martha Spencer - "Wonderland"

Image
The title track of Martha Spencer's upcoming album wonderfully shows off her unique take on country and roots music. "Wonderland" is deeply rooted in Appalachian folk and country, but Spencer adds a certain modern fun take on the sound with this one. There is still that haunting quality that is necessary for Appalachian folk music, and a darkness that almost makes this sound like a murder ballad. "Wonderland" brings with it a sense of whimsy and joy along with the implied darkness. Spencer also adds some jazz into her song, which certainly helps give it a unique and familiar feeling. Martha Spencer - "Young Rover"

Who doesn't love a great Appalachian murder ballad? Unfortunately, most tend to be about men murdering young women, which is why Martha Spencer wrote "Young Rover." This new single is a mixture of pure classic country and it's more shiny 70's counterpart. It's the kind of song that could have come out any time in the past fifty years, mostly in part to Spencer's vocals. Her voice just has that timeless country quality to it. She's hardly singing like a modern pop country singer, although "Young Rover" has quite a bit of mainstream appeal. As with any Appalachian murder ballad, the song is haunting but in a hopeful kind of way. You can watch the video for "Young Rover" below. Wonderland is due out September 2 on Gingham Rose/Karpie Diem Music. The album can be pre-ordered here . For more on Martha Spencer, check out the artist's website .

Martha Spencer - "Enchantress"

I'll be completely honest with you on the new song from Martha Spencer. I wasn't sure how I felt about it at first. I couldn't tell if I was enjoying it, or even if it was any good. But... I was oddly intrigued. Hailing from the mountains of Virginia, Spencer has created an odd little song that is in the territory of traditional folk, but with her own unique spin on it. I'm tempted to call it twee or quirky, except that "Enchantress" has far too dark of a vibe for that. This is a dark Appalachian folk song delivered in a lighthearted and fun way which makes it that much darker. Even if you're not sold on "Enchantress" right away, give it a few listens to settle.
