Who doesn't love a great Appalachian murder ballad? Unfortunately, most tend to be about men murdering young women, which is why Martha Spencer wrote "Young Rover." This new single is a mixture of pure classic country and it's more shiny 70's counterpart. It's the kind of song that could have come out any time in the past fifty years, mostly in part to Spencer's vocals. Her voice just has that timeless country quality to it. She's hardly singing like a modern pop country singer, although "Young Rover" has quite a bit of mainstream appeal. As with any Appalachian murder ballad, the song is haunting but in a hopeful kind of way.
