Bonny Light Horseman - "Someone to Weep for Me"

Image
No one is making folk/rock as beautiful as Bonny Light Horseman is these days. It's at the point that every time they release a new single, I keep treading the same water, but the supergroup of Anais Mitchell, Josh Kaufman, and Eric D. Johnson just keeps nailing it. The trio's new single, "Someone to Weep for Me," may be the best they've released from their upcoming album yet. It has such a laid back 70's California AM radio vibe, plus mesmerizing vocals and an electric guitar solo you wouldn't expect in such a laid back folk song. Bonny Light Horseman make traditional, straight ahead folk/rock in some unique and impossible to resist ways. You can listen to "Someone to Weep for Me" below. Rolling Golden Holy is due out October 7 on 37d03d. The album can be pre-ordered here . For more on Bonny Light Horseman, check out the artist's website . Upcoming tour dates are below the song. 9/30 – Sonoma, CA – Sonoma Winery Barn at Gundlach Bundschu 10/...

Bonny Light Horseman - "Sweetbread"

Image
Photo by D. James Goodwin The supergroup consisting of Anais Mitchell, Eric D. Johnson, and Josh Kaufman are just consistently releasing some of the best folk rock out there today. Bonny Light Horseman's latest single, "Sweetbread," is simply a perfect song. It's mainstream modern folk rock that just has that completely unique flair to it that helps set it apart from most of the other artists we cover here. Despite being purely a modern take on the traditional folk song, "Sweetbread" does have an indie rock vibe to it. It almost sounds as if Built to Spill decided to make a folk song. If you weren't excited for the upcoming album already, this is going to solidify it for you. Josh Kaufman says of the new song: “ We cut ‘Sweetbread’ late in the evening at Aaron Dessner’s Long Pond studio last summer. Kinda like starting to watch a movie too late, everyone was getting a little sleepy-eyed. Ana ï s went off to bed with her then-one-year-old while some of us...

Bonny Light Horseman - "Exile"

Image
Photo by D. James Goodwin The fact that a new song from Bonny Light Horseman is great shouldn't be surprising at this point. What's surprising about "Exile" is just how great it is. In other hands the song could easily slip into the easy listening/yacht rock side of things, and that's not to say that Bonny Light Horseman aren't edging into 70's AM radio territory here. But with just the intermingling vocals of Anais Mitchell and Eric D. Johnson's vocals, along with piano, banjo, and synths, the folk rock supergroup have crafted a song that is truly special.  Eric D. Johnson says of the new song: “ The lyrics of this one, open-ended as they may be, are filled with primal and mythological fears — lion's dens, hurricanes, wild eyes and the deep dark. Fears that are conquered by, naturally, love love love. But please, feel free to take what you want from this one, story-wise. And if nothing more, throw it on and do a slow-spin groove in front of your s...

Bonny Light Horseman - "Summer Dream"

Image
Photo by D. James Goodwin Bonny Light Horseman (aka the folk supergroup of Josh Kaufman, Anais Mitchell, and Eric D. Johnson) has just released the perfect song for the summer, and not just because of its title. "Summer Dream" is a perfect light and airy folk/rock song. It has impeccable harmonizing and is about as mainstream as you can get with folk without crossing the line into pop. This is the perfect song for just being lazy during the summer. It's the sound of hanging out by a campfire, lounging on a porch, sitting on a beach... pretty much the only place this isn't perfect for is being inside of anything. Anais Mitchell says of her band's new song: “I think of ‘Summer Dream’ as the ultimate example of the ‘yes, and’ process we got into for this record. There was something we could all feel about this ‘ghost of a summer’s past,’ so the scene is true to each of us but somehow remains mysterious–a phantom. We could have sung that wordless outro for an hour, an...

Bonny Light Horseman - "California"

Image
Photo by D. James Goodwin The folk supergroup of Bonny Light Horseman completely won me over when I saw them last year at the Green River Festival, and I finally have a new song to play incessantly. Anais Mitchell, Eric D. Johnson, and Josh Kaufman have released "California," and it fits right in with what we love about Bonny Light Horseman. This is modern folk done at its finest. It's all gorgeous vocal harmonies with hynpotic guitar. Bonny Light Horseman are simply mesmerizing in their music, and this one of their more magnificent ones. Eric D. Johnson says of the new song: “This one started off as a little crooked minor-key old timey tune. Then the three of us took it through the ringer together and it became what you’re hearing now. We sat in a room in the woods of New York and clawed and pawed at it until it turned into a little bittersweet shuffler. Our first record was largely centered on the old world, whether it was some sort of mythical sweeping landscape on som...
