Overheard - "Return"

Image
Photo by Becky Cote Based out of Brooklyn and Kingston, NY, Overheard have a sound not exactly like anyone else. Their latest single, "Return," is, for lack of anything closer, a folk song. It has all of the elements, and the vocals are certainly geared towards the more mainstream side of the genre. But then the music takes a much darker and distinctly foreboding turn. It's bordering on being more of a rock song, but never quite goes far enough, even with all the reverb being utilized. The closest artist I can compare "Return" to is a more rock based version of The Huntress & Holder of Hands. The song is also both mellow and intense, just to add some more glorious confusion to the sound. Guitarist/vocalist Erin Barth-Dwyer says of her band's latest single: “‘Return’ is about life and how we’re interconnected with each other and the world around us. The lyrics were partially inspired by the book  Entangled Life  by Merlin Sheldrake. In it there’s a passag...

Arny Margret - "akureyri"

Image
Photo by Benni Valsson Last month we brought you the debut single from Iceland's Arny Margret. We said that it was "... perfectly familiar despite not sounding quite like anyone else." She just released a second single, and "akureyi" keeps that sound going perfectly. Margret sounds like your favorite acoustic singer/songwriters that don't quite fit into folk but are maybe a little bit folk, but she just has this wonderfully unique vocal delivery. It's warm and welcoming while keeping you at a little bit of a distance. According to a press release, the new song is "... about how you judge yourself unfairly through the eyes of those that would put you down," which could explain the overall vibe of the song. You can watch the video for "akureyri" below. intertwined is due out February 25 on One Little Independent, and can be pre-ordered/pre-saved here . It's composed of Margret's vocals and acoustic guitar. The song is stunning in its simple beauty. Margret has this instantly compelling vocal style that feels perfectly familiar despite not sounding quite like anyone else. "intertwined" is a mesmerizing debut single that is going to have you rushing to all of Margret's socials to make sure you don't miss a follow up. Arny Margret says of her new single: “Past experiences kept coming back to me while I was alone, and all these feelings mixed with the weather and the trees somehow. I dreamt about these things, and I came up with the lyric ‘our pasts are intertwined,’ as if you’re connected to someone even if you don’t want to be.”  You can listen to "intertwined" below. The song is available as a single ...
