Jake McKelvie & the Countertops Cover Glen Campbell

I've been surprised by how few Glen Campbell tributes there have been since the country legend passed away earlier this week. Maybe it's because we've known he was sick for years and it wasn't exactly unexpected, but it just seems like it's already been forgotten. Luckily, Jake McKelvie & the Countertops are here with a cover of Campbell's "Gentle On My Mind." Originally recorded back in December during their Converse Rubber Tracks session, this is everything you want in a cover song. It's definitely Jake McKelvie & the Countertops doing their 90's alternative throwback thing, but there isn't even the slightest hint of irony here. It reminds me a lot of Pavement's more rambling songs where they just dip the tiniest bit into country. A solid week. Album of the Week : Artist : The Secret Sisters Album : You Don't Own Me Anymore Quick Description : Long-awaited third album from the folkies. Why You Should Listen : This is a gorgeous, amazing album. Overall Thoughts : I won’t lie – the second Secret Sisters album didn’t grab me the way the first one did. This new album sounded promising given the early music that was released, and the whole album is a nice, familiar relief. I loved every aspect of this, which is why it’s my album of the week – it’s taken a few albums, but they’ve really perfected their sound. The harmonies are spot on, the music absolutely gorgeous. There is nothing negative I can say about this, and it’s an album that needs to be on your list for listening this week. Recommendation : A must-listen, easily the best of the week. Artist : Katy Perry Album : Witness Quick Description : Pop starlet's latest. Why You Should Listen : It's not what you think. Overall Thoughts ...

While you wait for tomorrow's new releases, here are some favorites from last week: Washed Out - Paracosm : Washed Out might be best known for his song being used for the theme for Portlandia , but those expecting another chillwave piece are going to be disappointed in this album that, on one hand, sounds like nothing else before it, and, on the other, doesn't sound like anything especially compelling. On first listen, it's just kind of...there, and nothing about it stands out. I was hoping for some nice electronica and got something very different, and I'm honestly torn about this album so far. Glen Campbell - See You There : Glen Campbell recently finished his farewell tour, as he is suffering from Alzheimer's disease. This album is his revisiting some of his most famous or important songs a final time in a more stark, spacious tone. It's a great album, but the shadow of Campbell's illness really impacts one...
