J Mau & The Kiss Off - "Poison"

Image
Photo by Zache Davis J Mau & The Kiss Off is lead by Justin Maurer, founder of Clorox Girls, Suspect Parts, LA Drugz, and Maniac. After a divorce, Maurer rediscovered classic country and finally understood it. This led to the formation of J Mau & The Kiss Off. Their new single, "Poison," is classic country through the lens of a punk lifer. As classic as "Poison" sounds, there's something modern sounding about it as well. It's twangy with more than a little bit of an edge. If you want your country to be vintage with a hint of menace, this one is going to be for you. You can watch the video for "Poison" below. The single is available now on Bandcamp . For more on J Mau & The Kiss Off, check out the band on Instagram and Facebook .

Marissa Nadler featuring John Cale - "Poison"

Image
Sometimes you don't know you need something until you actually have it. That's the case with Marissa Nadler's duet with The Velvet Underground's John Cale. It seems like the song was written by Nadler without the knowledge that she'd be joined by Cale. Nadler says of the song: “Sometimes it's best not to know in advance; that's what I continually remind myself about how this duet with legendary songwriter John Cale came together .  Had I known that Justin and Lawrence would arrange for Cale to sing ‘Poison’ with me before I wrote or recorded it, I cannot be certain I wouldn't have become frozen with hesitations and second-guessing. How do you even start to go about writing a duet with a member of the Velvet Underground?   Surely I might have nervously changed the lyric that accidentally namechecks a title of a Velvet Underground song (‘Run Run Run’), at the very least. For me, Cale is one of the most influential rock musicians, remaining admirably ha...

Wargirl - "Poison"

Image
After listening to the newest single from Wargirl, I was surprised to find out they are from Long Beach, CA. Their sound is more English, or at least New York than outside of Los Angeles. "Poison" is a slinky disco meets post punk song. It's a really unique sound that they credit from being from Long Beach. According to guitarist Matt Wignall:  “No matter whether you see us or hear us, we always come across as a diverse bunch: ethnically as well as in terms of gender and preferences. However, whilst this may be considered colourful elsewhere, in Long Beach it is totally normal. Nobody else sounds like us, and yet we sound like the environment we come from.” Wargirl also credits The Clash's Sandinista! as a major influence, which makes perfect sense. You can watch the video for "Poison" below. Wargirl's self titled debut album will be released on October 26 on Clouds Hill. You can pre-order a copy here .
