Daneshevskaya - "ROY G BIV"

Image
Photo by Lily Frances We've loved the singles we've heard from Daneshevskaya, but we're still surprised by her latest single. "ROY G BIV" might be the New York pre-school social worker/musician's most accessible single yet. This new song still focuses on her mesmerizing vocals, but despite being just over two minutes long, it feels like you've gone on a journey. In its short time, "ROY G BIV" sounds like an alt-pop song, an orchestral piece, a song from a musical, alt-folk, etc. Daneshevskaya does this so effortlessly and makes the inclusion of different styles so gently that you hardly notice it. This new song is brilliant, and has us even more excited for an album we were highly anticipating already. Anna Daneshevskaya Beckerman says of her latest single: “This song was definitely inspired by working with kids and seeing how their worlds hinge upon small discrepancies. I always love when kids instinctually put things in order, and I could see a...

Daneshevskaya - "Challenger Deep"

Image
Photo by Marcus Maddox Daneshevskaya, aka the songwriting project of NYC preschool social worker Anna Deneshevskaya Beckerman, just released a new single, and it's something you need to check out immediately. "Challenger Deep" is a stunning, dreamlike song that is both lush and sparse. It's a simple song that focuses on Beckerman's vocals and harmonies, and it's not like we could pay attention to much else in this one. The song is simply gorgeous and feels like your favorite children's stories did when you were a kid, despite this song not being childlike at all. "Challenger Deep" is such a simple and beautiful song, despite it being quite complex. Daneshevskaya says of her new single: “There’s a story I read to the kids that I work with about how, when you say goodbye to someone, there’s an invisible string that connects you. My version of that is seeing someone at the end. Even if it is pretend, it’s a nice idea.”  You can watch the video for ...

Daneshevskaya - "Big Bird"

Image
Photo by Marcus Maddox Daneshevskaya is the musical project of Brooklyn-based preschool social worker Anna Beckerman. Her latest single, "Big Bird," is going to appeal to fans of artists in the boygenius camp, except "Big Bird" is somehow both more folky and grungy than they typically get. In a two and a half minute span, the song switches tempos and styles, from a beautiful, otherworldly, folk adjacent style song, to a neo-grunge style, and to a more pop-ish track. The song feels like it should be roughly seven minutes long considering how much is packed into it, so our only complaint is wanting more.  Anna Beckerman says of her new single:  “I wrote ‘Big Bird’ on GarageBand on my phone. It automatically loops when you use it on your phone so the song ended up being a loop. When I showed the demo to Artur, Ruben, and Hayden, I said we could turn it into a full song but they were into the loop. The lyrics are about when a big bird swoops down and everyone in the are...
