Sam and Louise Sullivan - "Love & Devotion"

Philadelphia brother and sister duo Sam and Louise Sullivan have a new single out that is stunningly great. "Love & Devotion" feels like a cover song in that it instantly feels familiar, like you've heard it before, just not the way that the siblings perform it. It's an odd and quirky little slice of alt-pop with hints of folk, but the song is so well written and unique that you're going to get instantly sucked in. From there, the song keeps getting better and more infectious. It's a groovy little song that reminds me of Rilo Kiley meets The Beach Boys at their most adventurous. Even if "Love & Devotion" doesn't grab you right away, I implore you to give it a shot until the end. After that, it might end up on endless repeat for you.

Sam Sullivan says of his band's latest single:

“‘Love & Devotion’ is our folk-rock wedding song. It's fashionable these days to say, 'ooh, love is so hard; we have to work on our relationship; we need to find compromise, etc.' No. Wrong. Love should be easy and very fun. We were trying to sound as if Kool and the Gang were being played by a band who normally plays contradances and hoedowns.”

This new single might be the most classically shoegaze song they've released to date. It sounds like it could be a lost song from the Loveless sessions. It's filled with a heavy wall of fuzz and lumbers along at a midtempo pace. As always, Aislinn Ritchie's vocals have a slight pop sheen to them, even if they tend to take a backseat to the music surrounding her. This mixed with the absolutely punishing drums throughout "all tied up" make it a heavy shoegaze instant masterpiece. The musical project of Mackenzie Scott has released a new single that features her vocals and acoustic guitar that would feel at home in a neo-folk song over a pre-programmed drum beat with sounds that at times are either a light squall of guitar feedback and electronic noises. The song has this haunting and unsettling feeling to it, despite sounding like it's trying to be upbeat. I'd say art doesn't always have to be a pleasant experience, but "I got the fear" can be a pleasant listening experience, except for the times it's not. Daisy the Great - "Ballerina"

It's kind of like if The Donnas were both more raw and more pop. Plus, "Ballerina" is incredibly theatrical. It sounds like it's taken off of some unreleased punk rock Broadway musical. Not many bands can pull off raw punk at the same time as theatrical musical, but Daisy the Great prove it can be done, and done amazingly well.
