Artist : Laura Veirs Album : Found Light Quick Thoughts : It's been a little while since the last album from Laura Veirs, and this latest effort provides more of the great indie songwriting Laura Veirs is so good at. This album retains some of the jagged edges we've come to expect while retaining the unique melodic structures that I fell for way back in the Carbon Glacier era. If you're a fan, you don't want to miss this. If you are new, this is as good a place as any to start out. This weekend got away from me, so we're doing some quick hits: Highlights of the week: * Andrew Bird - My Finest Work Yet : While My Finest Work Yet probably doesn't reach the heights of some of his best work, this new album from Andrew Bird still succeeds in doing the trick in providing a classic Bird experience with a lot of solid songs and great moments throughout. * Tamaryn - Dreaming the Dark : Solid pop music that caught me my surprise. * Lambchop - This (Is What I Wanted to Tell You) : I've avoided Lambchop for some time, and after finally diving in on this minimalist approach, I just don't know why it took me so long. A great listen. * American Football - LP3 : I'm so glad they're back. This is at least as good as you think it should be, and is probably better. * Allison de Groot and Tatiana Hargreaves - Allison de Groot and Tatiana Hargreaves : A truly solid bluegrass release this week. Lots to get to today... Album of the Week : Artist : Desperate Journalist Album : Grow Up Quick Description : Poppy post punk. Why You Should Listen : You still have some Doc Martens in the closet and want to party. Overall Thoughts : My favorite listen of the week from a band I did not know at all prior to this release, the best way I can describe them is Bully/Wolf Alice merged with Savages to give a fairly unique post-punkish sound that still has some solid poppy elements. A lot of releases this week and few truly grabbed me the way this one did. I sent it to Ken to listen to very early on in my listen, and this might be one of those weird dark horse albums that stays in my rotation for a while. Well done. Recommendation : Best of the week.
