Tricky featuring Marta - "Thinking Of"

Image
Photo by Erik Weiss By now we should all know the sound of Tricky. He's been making some of the world's finest trip hop for multiple decades, and he's a living legend of the genre. His newest single, "Thinking Of," moves back towards his classic sound than the previous single's ("Fall Please") more pop leaning sound. This isn't quite Tricky's dark trip hop of the 90's, but a lighter, more positive sound. Like "Fall Please," "Thinking Of" also features vocalist Marta, who Tricky discovered before a concert in Poland where he was left without a vocalist. The promoter suggested Marta, who was working in a nearby bar. You can listen to "Thinking Of" below. Fall to Pieces , the upcoming album from Tricky, will be out September 4 on False Idols. You can pre-order the album here . For more on Tricky, check out his website . Fall to Pieces by Tricky feat. Marta

Tricky featuring Marta - "Fall Please"

Image
Photo by Erik Weiss Like most people of a certain age, I went through an electronic phase in the late 1990's. Most of that music hasn't aged very well, but, for the most part, trip hop truly has. Tricky was one of my favorites back in the day, and it's thrilling that he's still making truly great music today. His latest single, "Fall Please," might be his most accessible yet. It sounds like it could have been released in 1998 or 2020 and equally sounds at home in either year. As with many of Tricky's songs, he doesn't contribute vocals. Those are handled by  Marta Złakowska , who he discovered on a European tour when he didn't have a singer for opening night. Tricky acknowledges the pop sensibilities on "Fall Please":  “ With most of my stuff, there’s nothing else like it around .  But with ‘Fall Please’ I’ve managed to do something I’ve never been able to before, which is that everyone can feel it - even people who don’t know my ...

Tricky featuring Anika - "Lonely Dancer"

Image
Trip hop legend Tricky is back with a new single and an upcoming EP. "Lonely Dancer" is an impossibly chill track, the kind Tricky can only pull off. It's the kind of song that just weighs on you with melancholy, but it's still a beautiful song you'll want to listen to on repeat. Berlin based singer Anika takes vocal duties on the song, and her voice perfectly matches the music and mood of the song. You can listen to "Lonely Dancer" below. Tricky's new EP, 20, 20 , will be out on March 6 on Tricky's False Idols label. You can pre-order the three song EP here . For more on Tricky, check out his website . Current tour dates are below the song. First Listen, Part Two: More New Releases for September 22

Image
Artist : The Blow Album : Brand New Abyss Quick Description : Latest from the popular indie act. Why You Should Listen : They're very buzzworthy. Overall Thoughts : This is a higher-profile indie release this week, and I’m not afraid to say I’ve never quite gotten The Blow. For me, they seem like a poppier version of The xx in a lot of ways, except that the sparse nature of what they do never fully connects. On the other hand, I know a handful of people who are pretty big fans, so this might more be an issue of my not getting it than anything else. You might love this, so give it a chance and you’ll know pretty fast if it’s for you. Recommendation : Worth some time Artist : Tricky Album : ununiform Quick Description : Latest from the trip-hop legend. Why You Should Listen : It's the most interesting release of the week musically. Overall Thoughts : Tricky sounded unlike anything else in the mainstream during his peak, and, honestly, he sounds unlike anything els...

First Listen: New Releases for January 15 and 22

NOW we're back in the swing of things! Album of the Week : Artist : Savages Album : Adore Life Quick Description : The much anticipated sophomore album from the Mercury-nominated indie rock band. Why You Should Listen : Their first album was incredible. Overall Thoughts : While it lacks the sort of immediacy that their debut had, Adore Life is still a very strong, very loud record in many regards. While a first listen doesn't result in any standout tracks, the cohesive whole easily makes it the best thing released in this two week period, and it might have some staying power to boot. A very strong follow-up. No sophomore slump here. Recommendation : A must-listen this week. And go back and listen to their debut again, too. Artist : Eleanor Friedberger Album : New View Quick Description : Third solo album from the Fiery Furnaces co-lead. Why You Should Listen : You like the Fiery Furnaces or you don't like the Fiery Furnaces because they're too weird...
