Tiberius - "Moab"

Image
Boston's favorite farm emo band released a new single last week, and as with the previous ones, "Moab" is pretty great. This new one seems to truly nail the genre of farm emo, which I believe I've said with the previous singles, but especially so with this one. It lands square in the middle of the two disparate genres, combining the twang of country with the earnestness of Midwest emo. There's also a surprising amount of pop sneaking around under the surface, and it's hard to tell if "Moab" is emo with twang or country with some emo/punk noise and aggression. It's one of the more unique sounds coming out of Boston these days, and I can honestly say no one in the city sounds quite like Tiberius. Brendan Wright (vocals/guitar) says of their band's latest single: “Moab was a song I wrote about trying to let go. At the time I was defining myself by expectations of a strained relationship. I was feeling pretty insane - like the kind of insane you ...

Tiberius - "Felt"

Photo by Zoe Hopper Boston's favorite "farm emo" group Tiberius have a brand new single out that perfectly captures the genre. "Felt" has all of the warmth of alt-country and the intensity of Midwest emo. Plus, Tiberius put just the perfect amount of twang into the song, which might end up making this one irresistible. While much modern country comes across as trite or forcing emotion, "Felt" wears its heart on its sleeve without ever falling into the mainstream, more whiny aspect of emo. It's even possible that people could listen to the song and not hear it as either country or emo. Without focusing on a genre, "Felt" is simply a great and captivating song that will have you highly anticipating Tiberius' latest album. Brendan Wright says of their band's latest single: "When I wrote Felt, I was fairly fresh out of a breakup and was spending a lot of time looking for distractions. Instead of tackling some bigger questions and...

Tiberius - "Sag"

Image
Photo by Zoe Hopper I wouldn't expect Boston to be the home of a "farm emo" band, but Tiberius have proven me wrong. The band started off as the solo project of Brendan Wright, but has grown into a quartet. Their latest single, "Sag," is one of the most interesting tracks I've heard in a while. The song slowly morphs from a fairly laid back and quiet song that is equal parts indie rock and folk with some country thrown in. By the end, it's a noisy and chaotic mess of a track, and I mean that in the best possible way. It definitely edges into emo territory, but more Jawbreaker and Sunny Day Real Estate emo than Top 40 emo. It's one of those songs that you'll want to go back and listen again to make sure you just heard what you think you heard. While many artists of today are melding genres into a new sound, Tiberius have seemingly invented a genre of their own. Brendan Wright says about their band's latest single: "Sag is about this dread...
