WITCH - "Kamusale"

Image
Photo by Izzie Austin Zamrock legends WITCH (aka We Intend to Cause Havoc) have their new album, SOGOLO , due tomorrow, and they have a new single out to keep us excited for it. "Kamusale" continues their previous singles' move towards a more rock based sound. The song has a crunchy guitar, and a sound that is a more updated version of their original 70's sound. "Kamusale" is based on a Bemba children's game song, and it has a certain vibe that makes it feel both retro and modern at the same time. It's a mixture of the funk of the 70's, the crunchy guitar of the 90's, and a modern sensibility that ties the whole thing together. WITCH have such an exciting sound on their hands, and we can barely wait until the full album comes out tomorrow. Frontman Emmanuelle "Jagari" Chanda says of the band's new single: “Children gather under the moonlight in the village and pretend to be preparing themselves for marriage.  So we are saying as...

WITCH - "Nadi"

Image
Photo by Izzie Austin Zamrock pioneers WITCH (aka We Intend to Cause Havoc) have a new single out that is going to blow some minds. "Nadi" is being called the heaviest song on their upcoming album, and it's certainly the heaviest we've covered of theirs. It's a psychedelic showcase heavy on funk and general groove. There aren't many songs out there you can headbang to and legitimately dance to, but "Nadi" pulls that off. It's along the lines of Parliament/Funkadelic's more rock focused songs, especially since it doesn't loose any of the groove we associate with WITCH. It's also certainly not a 70's throwback. It looks back at WITCH's past while pushing their sound and style forward. Guest singer Theresa Ng'Ambi says of the band's latest single: “When I created the lyrics for 'Nadi', I was in the studio in Berlin surrounded by energy of love, and creativity. 'Nadi' came from my heart an emotional need to...

WITCH - "Queenless King"

Image
Photo by Izzie Austin 2021 saw the reunion of Zamrock legends WITCH (We Intend to Cause Havoc) and 2023 saw the release of their first album in almost forty years, Zango. Now, they're once again back with new music. "Queenless King" sees WITCH infusing their Zamrock sound with more of a garage-psych sound. The song is endlessly captivating and has an undeniable energy. It's both a fuzzed out rock song and a classic psychedelic Zamrock showcase. The best part is that it truly sounds like a lost recording from the 70's. They even managed to get that gritty recording style that modern bands try all sorts of digital tricks to achieve. "Queenless King" shows that Zango wasn't just a one-off, and WITCH are back to bring us more great music. Jagari (lead vocals) says of the band's upcoming album: “‘SOGOLO’   means front or future. It is the future of a team with hope, peace, love; we’re wearing smiles, we march and dance to criss-cross rhythms. Let’s go...

WITCH - "Unimvwesha Shuga"

Photo by Pooneh Ghana WITCH (aka We Intend to Cause Havoc), the Zamrock pioneers who recently reunited, have released a new single that veers in a different direction than their previous one. "Avalanche of Love" was more of a psychedelic rock meets hip hop hybrid, while "Unimvwwesha Shuga" is more along the style of the group's 80's disco period. It's still WITCH, so the new song is more of a psychedelic version of disco than we're used to, which gives the track a very unique vibe. It's a fun track (it should be, it's disco) that somehow sounds modern by delving into the band's musical history. Singer Theresa Ng'ambi says of the new song: “In that studio, we felt the freedom to express ourselves in ways that are often restricted in our own culture because of us being women. 'Unimvwesha Shuga' is an expression of love and passion, we (Hanna and I) were gossiping about our fantasies as girls and the things we dreamt to express b...

WITCH featuring Sampa the Great - "Avalanche of Love"

Image
Zamrock pioneers WITCH (We Intend to Cause Havoc) formed in Zambia way back in the 1960's. Inspired by American and British bands like The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix, the band fused a rock sound with African rhythms. The band ended in the mid-80's. In 2011, Now-Again Records released a career spanning collection of their music giving the band a new legion of fans, but much of the original line up had passed away. Bandmembers Emmanuel "Jagari" Chandra and Patrick Mwondela reformed the band with a new line up in 2021, and have a new single coming out. Despite both main members being in their 70s, "Avalanche of Love" sounds surprisingly current. The song is this brilliant hybrid of rock, psychedelia, hip hop, and garage rock. There is a raw energy that reflects an intense love of music throughout the song. WITCH cycle through so many genres and tempos seemlessly during the four minute song that make it feel intensely epic. It's rare for a band from the...

The Freqs - "Witch"

Image
Photo via Facebook When you're a rock band from Salem, MA, you have to have at least one song about witchcraft. The Freqs have fulfilled their obligation with a banger of a song. "Witch" is this giant monster of a song, filled with fuzz and strained, screaming vocals. This is the type of song that doesn't usually exist in this century. It's giving me some serious 90's flashbacks, like if Hum got aggressive or Alice in Chains decided to do some damage on the college charts. As great as the vocals are in "Witch," what's really drawing me in is the instrumental break down that takes over about halfway through. This is the kind of song to make the hipsters and the headbangers equally excited. You can listen to "Witch" below. For more on The Freqs, check out the band on Facebook and Instagram .
