STL GLD have carved out their own niche in the world of hip hop lately. The Boston band just released "Pennies," which combines classic hip hop with a lo-fi indie rock vibe. The song has a sound that combines the abrasive qualities of both early Public Enemy and early 90's indie rock with the minimalism of early Wu-Tang Clan. Despite how minimal "Pennies" can sound, the song is still a straight up banger. It's not a club jam. Instead it's more of a backpack rap that is sure to have you nodding your head along and ingesting the lyrics presented by Moe Pope. If you loved the Judgment Night soundtrack but preferred the Del the Funky Homosapien/Dinosaur Jr and Sonic Youth/Cypress Hill collaborations, you're going to love this one.
You can listen to "Pennies" below. For more on STL GLD, check out the artist's website. If you're in the Portsmouth, NH area or don't mind the drive, they're playing The Press Room with Tori Tori on February 7.
