"Holy, Holy," the latest single from Worcester duo Sunday Junkie, is one of those songs where you'll know if it's for you pretty much instantly. Something about the guitar and drums grabbed me within the first five seconds of the song. It just sounds different, and a little menacing. Maybe it's just the fact that it's called "Holy, Holy," but the vocals have an unexpected hymn-like quality that inserts itself into the dreamlike quality of the song perfectly. The song is also surprisingly beautiful, in its own little way. It ends up evolving into a sort of post-rock power ballad. Sunday Junkie seem to be exploring and discovering their sound with "Holy, Holy" and their previous two singles, "Vultures" and "Haunted Head." We're looking forward to see where they continue to go from here.
Multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Tom Martin says of the band's latest single:
“I had issues with drinking in the past, and the lyrics on ‘Holy, Holy’ pretty heavily revolve around using alcohol as a means of self-medicating and ignoring a larger, underlying issue. It can be pretty insidious when it seems to provide relief, but the toll it’s taking is more evident to those around you and they just hope you can eventually see it too. The line ‘Honey on our tongues / Sucking on the rind’ is more of a reference to having everything at your fingertips, not realizing it, and choosing to throw it away instead.”
