Josaleigh Pollett - "Like a River"

Josaleigh Pollett has a new single out off of their upcoming album, and this might be my favorite of her pre-release singles so far. "Like a River" is an indie/folktronica masterpiece. The Salt Lake City artist immediately grabs you once the song starts without using volume. The song has so many elements inside of it that it requires multiple listens to fully grasp, although you're going to love it from listen number one. It's relatively calm but quietly intense, with an undeniable beat that adds to the hypnotizing effect. Plus, the calypso element is infectious and sucks you even deeper into the song.

Josaleigh Pollett says of their latest single:

“Like a River is about an attempt at quieting the noise of my own thoughts and of a chaotic world around me in order to try to be more resilient. A too-late-coffee-fueled yellow-light-lit silent moment - having arrived at myself just in time to feel my pulse speed up and the news of the day sweep me away into frothing rapids. Hoping for the peace of a quiet river bank, only to remember that a river is swift, chaotic, and ever-changing the earth beneath it. Inspired by Paul Simon's Peace Like a River- a song I've always held in my heart as a beautiful protest song."

This new single might be the most classically shoegaze song they've released to date. It sounds like it could be a lost song from the Loveless sessions. It's filled with a heavy wall of fuzz and lumbers along at a midtempo pace. As always, Aislinn Ritchie's vocals have a slight pop sheen to them, even if they tend to take a backseat to the music surrounding her. This mixed with the absolutely punishing drums throughout "all tied up" make it a heavy shoegaze instant masterpiece. "Sex and Money" is this perfect mix of all the phases of Loveless' career. It has the twang of her earlier alt-country classics, the noise and punk that has always been front and center during live shows, and the more pop side that has been on more recent albums. "Sex and Money" could be a trainwreck of a song, but Loveless has melded these genres into this perfectly structured song. "Fishnets" features verses from Bbymutha, SHA RAY, and August Fanon, and has an intense and almost menacing vibe, despite being an absolute banger of a track. It's hypnotic and immediately grabs your attention, and if you're unfamiliar with the trio of rappers on the song, you're sure to start pulling up their bodies of work.
