Originally from Salem, MA and now a Maine resident, Jon Chesbro recently released an EP that has a familiar yet unique sound. The five songs on Outta State Outta Mind are an interesting mixture of 90's singer-songwriter alt-rock and modern Americana. In 2024 I recognize the country/roots sound in a song like "Against the Crowd," but I certainly wouldn't have thirty years ago. It's a collection of laid back songs that bridge the gap between the worlds of indie rock and jam bands, much like My Morning Jacket or Wilco can. Chesbro also has a unique way of crafting a song. There's a certain DIY and punk edge to his songs even despite how laid back the entire EP is. Outta State Outta Mind is well worth your time and is one of the more compelling mainstream-ish singer-songwriter releases of the year.
Jon Chesbro says of his latest EP:
“I feel like this EP has been two years in the making. Not all on purpose, but through life's ups and downs I feel like I’ve been granted this perspective that I can only tell through music. That perspective is through the lens of failure, success, heartbreak, friendship and everything in between. After receiving some of my own heartbreak and getting fed up with life, during Covid’s standstill, I decided to leave my hometown and look for something better. I gained new knowledge and experience. After traveling the country for a bit I found myself back home with my tail between my legs. I didn’t know which way was up, I just knew I had to do something.”
