Seafoam Walls call their sound "Caribbean jazzgaze," which does fit their latest single. "Rapids" is a laid back but intense new song. It's almost hypnotic in its pace and sound. The music seems almost monotone at times, over a surprisingly lively hip hop beat. The song has kind of a 90's alt-rock sound from the period where electronic elements started sneaking into mainstream rock bordering on trip hop. Included with that is some of the wall of fuzz associated with shoegaze. "Rapids" has such a unique sound while also feeling like a sonic warm blanket of familiarity.
Lead singer Jayan Bertrand says of the band's latest single:
"Rapids is short for white water rapids. A fast-moving body of water that cares or waits for no living being. I see time in a similar way. Society will progress without you if you get stuck in your ways. It helps to be as fluid as the times allow."
You can watch the video for "Rapids" below. Standing too Close to the Elephant in the Room is due out October 18 on Dion Dia. For more on Seafoam Walls, check out the artist on Facebook and Instagram.
