Her latest single, "Mirror," has a singer-songwriter goes slightly dance music with some jazz influences. There's a lot going on in this song, but it's still a laid back and incredibly captivating song. It's the type of song that could almost be used as background music but will soon demand all of your attention and focus. The more attention you pay to "Mirror," the more it will reward you. The Weather Station wanders right up to the edge of the mainstream here, but decides it's more fun and interesting not to cross the line. This one is reminding me of Tori Amos' late 90's releases. This month we get "Body Moves," which is more of a traditional song from The Weather Station. It's a laid back singer-songwriter track with some lighter dance vibes and a strong jazz side to it. Not many tracks can be described as both ethereal and groovy, but "Body Moves" pulls it off. It's the type of song that is instantly compelling, and only gets more and more so as it goes on. The Weather Station has a knack for starting a song off more simply and then getting more involved as it goes on, and "Body Moves" is a prime example. Photo by Brendan George Ko According to the press release for the new single from The Weather Station, the project's upcoming album is "... the weirdest Weather Station record, yet, the most visceral." The musical project of Tamara Lindeman's new single, "Window," definitely fits that description. It has more of a rock sound to it than we're used to from The Weather Station, while still having that kinda sorta dance pop sound we've come to love from Lindeman. Plus, there is an abundance of flute throughout the song. "Window" is a driven song that instantly grabs your attention and holds it throughout multiple listens. This is strangely accessible art-rock-ish music, delving into singer-songwriter and possibly even folk at times. You can watch the video for "Windows" below. Tamara Lindeman had written an abundance of material for that album, so when it was completed she decided to make another. For this one, she used her own money to get back into the studio without telling her record company. The first song off this album is "Endless Time." The new song is a simple and gorgeous piano ballad. It was recorded on March 11, 2020... and we all know the significance of that time period. The song somehow captures the tension of that time, with literally every aspect of life being up in the air. It does all that with just Lineman's vocals and piano, and ends up being one of the most lovely songs we've heard in a long time despite the inherent tension. Artist : Nana Yamato Album : Before Sunrise Quick Description : Your new favorite lo-fi indie artist has arrived. Why You Should Listen : This grabbed me within minutes of the first song. Overall Thoughts : I can't be more effusive about Before Sunrise than to say that this is borderline relevatory. Nana Yamato has put forward an album that both can't exist in any other time and yet feels somewhat timeless in its execution. It's indie, it's DIY, but it also feels incredibly deep, with some weight behind it. "Do You Wanna" is great, "Gaito" is great, the whole package is wonderful. I can't wait to go back to this one. Photo by Daniel Dorsa We should all be past the whole disco sucks nonsense at this point. If you're not, you're going to miss out on the sheer beauty of the latest from The Weather Station. Tamara Lineman's project has released "Parking Lot," and it's a quiet and soft disco song. Quiet and disco don't normally go together, but "Parking Lot" fits that description. It's a gorgeous, string heavy song that could have been a lovely little ballad, but it has these soft disco beats underneath the song that propel it. It might not be a party or a club anthem, but you can still dance to it, although it's more of a song that you'd dance to by yourself in your bedroom. Photo by Jeff Bierk Tamara Lindeman's project The Weather Station has released one of the more interesting singles in recent memory. "Atlantic" is nearly a dance/pop track. It certainly has the beat and groove for that, but it can hardly be considered pop. "Atlantic" is artsy as hell, and contains too many organic elements to be considered a dance track, even though it is. Instead of electronic music, the song contains little bursts of woodwind and strings that you would never expect. Plus, Lindeman's vocals are captivating and unique, but hardly what you would expect in pop or dance. It's truly a unique song from an artist that is going to demand our attention. The rest for the week: Artist : Cults Album : Offering Quick Description : Latest from the buzzy reverb rockers. Why You Should Listen : Cults has made enough of a splash that they're worth a listen. Overall Thoughts : Everyone knows "Go Outside," but this third album moves in a bit more of a poppy direction for them, and it works in the sense that they absolutely have hit their stride as a band, but this is a sound that hasn't quite stayed as relevant as one might expect. I feel like I'm damning this with faint praise, but this album is just good, but not essential in a busy week. Recommendation : Perhaps a fans-only affair.
