Big D and the Kids Table - "Scatterbrain"

Boston ska-punk heroes Big D and the Kids Table have a new single out off of their upcoming album. "Scatterbrain" is a wonderfully chilled out version of the genre. It might be from going to a bunch of Warped Tours in the late 90's/early 00's, but I always associate ska-punk with summertime, and this latest single is a perfect summer song. It has that laid back summer feel to it, more for hanging out than for moshing. It does have enough energy to it to inspire some dancing and grooving, but "Scatterbrain" is also perfect for just hanging out. Even though it's a brand new song, Big D and the Kids Table are giving me flashbacks of my late teens and early twenties.

Frontman Dave McWane says of the band's latest single:

“I’m so old school that I had ADHD before they added the ‘H’!” says frontman Dave McWane. “When I was in 2nd grade the teachers & school didn't know what to do with me. Why does he test so high in these subjects, but so low in these & why does he talk so much? So me, with a few other brave mutants, went to a school for kids like us, got tested endlessly and were always marginalized by the system.

“Today it gives me a careful smile when younger people come up to me and tell me that they have ADHD freely and nonchalantly. It's beautiful to me. Though the same problem exists today and has been normalized — I don't, and they don't, have a ‘learning disability.’ They don't have a ‘disorder.’ Obviously the person who titled these gifts didn't have them. Everyone should start calling it ‘ATC’ — Attention To Creativity. That's what "Scatterbrain" is about.”

TORRES - "I got the fear"

The musical project of Mackenzie Scott has released a new single that features her vocals and acoustic guitar that would feel at home in a neo-folk song over a pre-programmed drum beat with sounds that at times are either a light squall of guitar feedback and electronic noises. The song has this haunting and unsettling feeling to it, despite sounding like it's trying to be upbeat. I'd say art doesn't always have to be a pleasant experience, but "I got the fear" can be a pleasant listening experience, except for the times it's not. "Fishnets" features verses from Bbymutha, SHA RAY, and August Fanon, and has an intense and almost menacing vibe, despite being an absolute banger of a track. It's hypnotic and immediately grabs your attention, and if you're unfamiliar with the trio of rappers on the song, you're sure to start pulling up their bodies of work. "Heartthrob" is an upbeat song that is guaranteed to make listeners want to dance. As dance focused as the song is, it has such a raw and rough element in its instrumentation that makes it rock based. Then there's De Souza's vocals that truly blend both genres.
