Girl with a Hawk - "Wasn't It Just Yesterday"

Girl with a Hawk are set to release their debut album next month, and the latest single from that album is one of the best songs out there about aging. There's a feeling that being in a band is something you do in your teens and twenties, and then grow out of by your thirties. Same thing with going to concerts, listening to new music, having music journalism as a hobby, etc. "Wasn't It Just Yesterday" is about aging in rock 'n' roll. It's a 70's style Americana/rock song with some tweaks to make it sound more modern. You know how we're supposed to say "They don't make music like that anymore?" This is the music that's supposedly not made anymore. Besides just being a killer rock song, it's the kind of song those of us right up front at a rock show well into our forties and beyond will appreciate the message of. 

Frontperson Linda S. Veins says of the band's upcoming album:

“At least four or five of the songs on the record speak to a life lived being in bands, the bonds forged, and the life of a musician and performer, with themes of loss, addiction, death and redemption woven through. Being a musician, like all performing arts, can be a very physically and emotionally taxing profession and it can take its toll. All the cliches about spending your time in bars, being on the road, being ‘out’ and not at home, are real.”

The musical project of Mackenzie Scott has released a new single that features her vocals and acoustic guitar that would feel at home in a neo-folk song over a pre-programmed drum beat with sounds that at times are either a light squall of guitar feedback and electronic noises. The song has this haunting and unsettling feeling to it, despite sounding like it's trying to be upbeat. I'd say art doesn't always have to be a pleasant experience, but "I got the fear" can be a pleasant listening experience, except for the times it's not. "Fishnets" features verses from Bbymutha, SHA RAY, and August Fanon, and has an intense and almost menacing vibe, despite being an absolute banger of a track. It's hypnotic and immediately grabs your attention, and if you're unfamiliar with the trio of rappers on the song, you're sure to start pulling up their bodies of work. The New Limits - "My Record Store"

Photo via Facebook For a lot of us, ska is the sound of nostalgia. We went through our ska phase in the 90's, and while some of us moved on, some of us have remained fans of the genre. The latest from Boston's The New Limits is a ska song about nostalgia. "My Record Store" is about the joy of record shopping in a physical, dusty record store. Plus, the song just sounds like vintage ska, combining elements from all three waves of ska. Also, ska is meant to be a fun genre and "My Record Store" is a fun song.
