Hailing from New York City, Panik Flower are a dreamgaze band that wear their 90's influences on the sleeves. Their latest single, "ocd," has elements of the noiser side of 90's alt-rock with some of the more lovely versions of that era. As soon as the song starts, the guitar tones and Sage Leopold's vocal delivery are going to remind you of Sonic Youth, albeit a more restrained version. "ocd" has too smooth of a feel to truly fit into Sonic Youth's No Wave/indie rock sound. Instead, the song sounds like if Sonic Youth worked with The Sundays to soften their sound into something more beautiful without losing their edge. This is our introduction to Panik Flower, and we're looking forward to hearing a lot more from this band.
Sage Leopold says of her band's latest single:
“The song explores the obsessive and addictive relationship we have with media consumption in today’s world and how that shapes us as individuals. It has a complete chokehold on our daily functions living in the modern world even when you’re aware of how toxic it is. The chorus really drives this point home with the repetition of the lines ‘you catch yourself but you can’t catch a break, you catch yourself but you can’t look away.’”
You can watch the video for "ocd" below. rearview is due out April 30, and is available for pre-order here. For more on Panik Flower, check out the band's website.
