Sweet Soubrette - "Making Do"

Image
Sweet Soubrette, the solo project of Ellia Bisker of Charming Disaster, has made a song that can only make sense in 2020. "Making Do" is a song about making masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Obviously, the song is hardly cheerful given the subject matter, but since it's Sweet Soubrette, that makes perfect sense. I can't think of anyone else that could make a song right now about making masks to help out the collective whole that trudges along like a conveyor belt, and still keeping a sense of optimism and community intact. We may never want to listen to "Making Do" once this is all over, but for right now this song has the charm and begrudging positivity we all need right now. You can listen to "Making Do" below. The song is available as a download on Sweet Soubrette's Bandcamp . There is also the option to purchase a mask with your download. For more on Sweet Soubrette, check out the artist's website . Sweet Soubrette - "Almond Milk and Eggs"

Image
Sweet Soubrette, the solo project of Ellia Bisker of Charming Disaster, is back with a new quarantine written song. "Almond Milk and Eggs" is a quietly lovely song based on a poem by Ash Andrews, who also joins in on vocals. The song consists mostly of Bisker's voice and ukulele, with some trumpet and electric bass. The result is a quiet, reflective song that edges into Neutral Milk Hotel territory. It's a beautiful, reflective song that is guaranteed to suck you in. Somehow Sweet Soubrette accomplishes this in just over two minutes, even though the song feels like a quiet epic. You can listen to "Almond Milk and Eggs" below. The song is currently available on Sweet Soubrette's Bandcamp . For more on Sweet Soubrette, check out the artist's website . Sweet Soubrette - "Typhoid Mary"

Image
Photo via Facebook It's been a few years since we've heard from Sweet Soubrette, aka Ellia Bisker's (Charming Disaster) solo project. Her new single, "Typhoid Mary," is inspired by the coronavirus pandemic and is about Mary Mallon, who infected dozens of people with typhoid while showing no symptoms until she was imprisoned in quarantine. It's a two minute quickie song that fits with Charming Disaster's dark folk cabaret while being more pop, which is what we expect from Sweet Soubrette. Plus, the addition of "Ring Around the Rosie" added in the middle just adds to the creepy factor. You can listen to "Typhoid Mary" below. The song is available now on Sweet Soubrette's Bandcamp. First Listen: New Releases for November 25

We basically only have a couple weeks of new releases left for the 2016 calendar year, so this week has a few new releases and a few I tripped up on late. Artist : Various Artists Album : Polyvinyl Plays Polyvinyl Quick Description : A Polyvinyl Records celebration for their 20th birthday. Why You Should Listen : It's current Polyvinyl artists playing past Polyvinyl songs... Overall Thoughts : ...and it's predictably hit or miss. As someone who has been loving Polyvinyl stuff for most of their existence, I knew I'd love and hate some of this, and it's great for that sort of fun look back, but I wouldn't recommend this to anyone but fans of Polyvinyl's catalog. And the fact that no one covered "Marry Me, Archie" is just criminal. Recommendation : Fun for fans or those into weird covers. Artist : Natalie McCool Album : The Great Unknown Quick Description : Poppy singer with a weird bent. Why You Should Listen : You like melodic pop, but w...
