Album: Exhibition
Quick Thoughts: The ska revival is alive and well as long as The Boy Detective are on the case. This gives me big mid-1990s Less Than Jake vibes in all the right ways, and it's a great ska throwback without feeling like a throwback, if that makes sense. Plus, the Fall Out Boy-style long titles kind of make the complete package. A great listen this week.
Songs of Note: "Some Drakkar Noir Wearing Dexter With a Boner," "Replacement," "The Secret Life (And Tragic Death) of Richard T. Owl," "It's Not About the Horniness, It's About the Loneliness," "She Only Dates Astronauts (So What on Earth is She Doing With Me?)," "My Figurative Heart"
Artist: Thank
Album: I Have a PHysical Body That Can Be Harmed
Quick Thoughts: Post punk is in a heyday all its own right now, and while Thank isn't quite as melodic as Viagra Boys or as angsty as Idles, it's near-impossible to listen to a song like "Woke Frasier" and not come away believing that the band isn't on another level entirely. This won't be for everyone, but in so many ways this was very much for me, and it's worth your time to see if it's for you as well.
Songs of Note: "Woke Frasier," "Do It Badly," "Barely," "Writing Out a List of All the Names of God"
Artist: Sassyhiya
Album: Take You Somewhere
Quick Thoughts: Sassyhiya is reminiscent of those sort of indie pop bands that showed up on every mixtape trade you ever took part in. I was on board due to "Kristen Stewart," which should be elevated into the pantheon of songs about celebrities, but the whole thing is a feel-good listen in a time where we can really use one.
Songs of Note: "Boat Called Predator," "Kristen Stewart," "Crayon Potato," "On Our Way," "Thank You and Goodbye"
Artist: Our Girl
Album: The Good Kind
Quick Thoughts: Wanted to point out the new one from Our Girl as well, which is a really accessible indie piece with some soaring vocals and a polished sound that creeps up out of nowhere. This showed up on a few new release playlists for me, and each time was the same reaction when the song came on: "Who is this!?" Learn their name, you won't regret it.
Songs of Note: "Who Do You Love," "Relief," "Something About Me Being a Woman"
