Photo by Katy McElroy Detroit experimental supergroup Winged Wheel have a brand new single out that pushes their sound forward. "I See Poseurs Every Day" is a shockingly groovy and noisy single that is heavily rooted in psychedelia. There are some elements of proto-punk, garage rock, folk music, and funk throughout the song. Interestingly, while most modern experimental music tends to look to the future for inspiration (either electronic or pure noise), Winged Wheel look towards the past. "I See Poseurs Every Day" is more along the lines of classic rock than a modern sound. This is like an unexpected melding of The Stooges, ZZ Top, and Neil Young. Photo by Katy McElroy Detroit band Winged Wheel, which features ex-Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, returns with a new single off their upcoming third album. "Beautiful Holy Jewel Home" is a mellow yet intense sonic experimentation. It's a noisy song that sounds kind of like if Neil Young tried his hand at playing shoegaze. It's a fuzzed filled song that is (relatively) mainstream, as far as experimental music goes. The song starts off somewhat straight forward before devolving into a mess of instruments, and then reforms itself just before coming to an end. As noise rock focused as "Beautiful Holy Jewel Home" is, it also has a strong base in roots music. Winged Wheel is a Detroit based supergroup consisting of Cory Plump, Fred Thomas, Whitney Johnson, and Matthew J Rolin. For their second album they expanded to include Lonnie Slack and Steve Shelley (which is how we discovered the band). The band met up in Kingston, NY to record, and the first thing we're hearing from that is "Sleeptraining." The band spent three days recording group improvisations and other experimentations, and began editing them down into actual songs. If "Sleeptraining" is any indication, Winged Wheel found absolute magic on those tapes. It's not quite shoegaze, but it's at the very least shoegaze adjacent. The song is fuzzy and just washes fully over you in a wall of sound, but it's far too intense for shoegaze. It's dark, and punk, and No Wave, and proggy, and beyong compelling.
