The greatest rock and roll band in the world are back with a new single that almost slipped by us! Supersuckers have returned with "Maybe I'm Just Messin' With You" is the first single off the follow up to 2020's Play That Rock N' Roll , and if you love Supersuckers, you're going to love this. This isn't the rock lifers changing up their sound, but a continuation of everything we've loved about them since first hearing "Born With a Tail" way back in the 1900's. While most of their peers seem to be mellowing out at least a little bit, "Maybe I'm Just Messin' With You" is the noisiest they've been in years. It's rare that we can get excited about a new album from a band that's been around for almost forty years, but most bands aren't Supersuckers. Supersuckers are just one of those bands I try to see every year when they make their September swing through the area. This year they skipped The Middle East Upstairs and played Sammy's Patio at Revere Beach. Despite them also playing Turner's Falls, which is closer to my house, I chose the Sammy's Patio show because seeing Supersuckers at Revere Beach just felt right. Plus, Sunday night's show also included The Downhauls, and how could I pass that up? Supersuckers have a compilation from 1999 titled How the Supersuckers Became the Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World , and every time I see them, I once again believe that they are. The band has been playing an amped up version of no nonsense rock and roll occasionally mixed with country for decades now, and the trio have a shocking number of fantastic songs to choose from. The Supersuckers have been around since 1988, and Eddie Spaghetti has released five solo albums. Tomorrow marks the first solo release from Metal Marty, the band's guitarist since 2009. The first single from Metal Marty's Greatest Hits is "Goddamn Divorce," which is going to appeal to pretty much anyone who's in the Supersuckers. "Goddamn Divorce" lands somewhere between the rock 'n' roll side of Marty's band and their country side. It's a fun alt-country song about the perils of divorce that obviously sneaks a little metal guitar in. Plus, you get some bonus Eddie Spaghetti playing and providing backing vocals. In the past four years, I've seen the Supersuckers twice. Back in 2018 I saw them play in Worcester when they were celebrating their thirtieth anniversary by playing The Smoke of Hell  and La Mano Cornuda  in their entireties, and in 2019 I saw them in Hampton Beach, NH for the twentieth anniversary of The Evil Powers of Rock 'n' Roll . This year was the first time I saw them in Boston and for just a straight up show. Seeing them at The Middle East was a completely different world. The previous two shows were modestly attended at best, but Saturday night's show was packed if it wasn't sold out. This definitely wasn't a hipster crowd, either. This was a show for fans of rock 'n' roll even if it's not stylish. The theme of the night seemed to be nostalgia and rock 'n' roll. Spaghetti & Frank is the collaboration of Eddie Spaghetti of the Supersuckers and Frank Meyer of The Streetwalkin' Cheetahs. The duo decided to cover Tom Petty's 1987 classic "Jammin' Me," from the wildly overlooked album Let Me Up (I've Had Enough). It's not a straight up cover, as Spaghetti & Frank have updated some of the lyrics. Since Petty's original discussed the pop culture of the day, such as Joe Piscopo and Eddie Murphy, Spaghetti & Frank used it to discuss more current celebrities like Paris Hilton, Bill Cosby, and Mar-a-Largo. Plus, as you would assume, the cover rocks much harder, going more towards Spaghetti & Frank's punk roots and less in the post New Wave of Petty's.  You can watch the video for Spaghetti & Frank's version of "Jammin' Me" below. Back in 2014, Eddie Spaghetti was diagnosed with throat cancer while on tour with the Supersuckers. On June 19, the band closed out the tour in Seattle. In attendance that night were Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam) and Blind Marky Felchtone (Zeke). At the end of the show, Vedder and Felchtone joined Supersuckers for a rendition of the Ramones's classic "I Believe in Miracles." It's exactly as fantastic as you'd expect. It's just a straight up rock version of the punk epic, with a little grunge and garage tossed in. It was obviously an inspired choice, seeing how Spaghetti was staring down cancer, which he eventually beat. At this point in their thirty year career, you know what you're going to get with a new Supersuckers song. "Ain't Gonna Stop (Until I Stop It)" is a rock 'n' roll song, pure and simple. It's big and loud, with gigantic guitars and a big shout along chorus. Supersuckers aren't going to win over any hold-outs to their fandom with this one, and I don't think they're looking to. If you're a fan of theirs, you're going to like this. If you love big, loud rock and haven't checked out Supersuckers before, you owe it to yourself to give this a shot. Despite listening to the Supersuckers since the 90's, I had never seen them live. For some reason it's just never quite worked out. Once they announced their 30th Anniversary Big Show was coming to the distant suburbs, I knew I had to make it out for a night of big loud rock. In all the ads and promotion for this tour, Supersuckers let everyone know exactly what they were going to get: Songs from the recently released Suck It , a short country set, and The Smoke of Hell  and La Mano Cornuda  performed from start to finish. Forgotten Fridays is an occasional feature here at If It’s Too Loud... where we go back and find the lost records of our glory days. We played these on our college radio shows, put them on countless mix tapes, and then forgot they existed. We go back and remind you of their existence, and help decide if they were any good. Oh, the mid 1990's. It was the glory days of the compilation album, where labels would just throw a bunch of bands on a cd, knowing that as long as you liked two or three of the bands, you'd but the entire album since there was no way you'd ever have any other way to get a copy of the exclusive songs. One of their favorite ways to put one of these together was a tribute album. You'd get a bunch of bands that would usually never be associated together, often covering an artist you'd never expect.  One of these tribute albums was Twisted Willie , which is a mostly alternative tribute to Willie Nelson. This was a ridiculously full week for new releases, along with some really anticipated stuff and some real surprises. Let's dive right in: Album of the Week : Artist : YACHT Album : I Thought the Future Would Be Cooler Quick Description : Latest album by the indie-synth act, first featuring Claire Evans being the sole lead singer. Why You Should Listen : You feel like you've been missing out on fun music in your life. Overall Thoughts : There's definitely some attitude featured on this album, no doubt, but this is just an album that felt really fun on first listen. A number of standout songs across the board and an album I've wanted to jump back on board with as soon as I can. If you heard "Plastic Soul" from last year, you know the direction this is going, and this isn't really an unexpected listen from them. Easily the best thing I've heard this week, and absolutely one that I expect to see at the end of the year on some lists. Recommend...

Today we were surprised to learn that not only is there a new album coming out, but it's due next week! Holdin' the Bag  will feature a duet with blog favorite, Lydia Loveless. "I Can't Cry" is a lot more serious and introspective than the normal Supersuckers cowpunk fare, but I suppose facing mortality will do that. That's not to say it's all sad and bleak. Even though the song features the chorus "It doesn't matter how hard I try, I can't cry," Spaghetti also wrote the line "Your dick is in the dirt" for Loveless to sing. Bad news for everyone: Eddie Spaghetti of The Supersuckers has been diagnosed with stage 3 oropharynx cancer. This summer he will undergo surgery and treatment to fight the cancer. This completely cancels the band's planned summer European tour, and put the upcoming Supersuckers album in jeopardy.  As you probably know, musicians don't always have the best health care providers, and don't exactly have medical leave. There's a YouCaring page set up to help Eddie's family with medical expenses and to offset the loss of income from the cancelled tour. The Supersuckers aren't exactly a top 40 act, so the majority of their income comes from touring. As of this writing, $17,000+ of the $50,000 goal has been raised to help Eddie out. Another somewhat busy week. Let's dive right in: The Crystal Method - The Crystal Method : To think they've been doing this for 20 years now... I loved Vegas in high school, but I can't say I've been a huge fan of theirs since. With the whole dubstep thing, the sort of music they've made feels a little more out of place, but their new self-titled album is probably my favorite release this week. It sounds like a Crystal Method album while still remaining relevant to the electronic music that's currently what people are listening to. And it has a LeAnn Rimes song on it. Go figure. Worth a listen, in any regard. Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings - Give the People What They Want : If there's a group that is more consistently solid from album to album than Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, I don't know who they are. To celebrate their signing with Acetate Records, Supersuckers are releasing a free 6 song EP with selections from their back catalog, kind of a mini greatest hits package. The band is about to head down to Willie Nelson’s Arlyn Studio in Austin , TX to record their ninth studio album, their first since 2008’s Get It Together . Arlyn Studio is where Supersuckers recorded their classic Sacrilicious album for SubPop back in 1995, so expect some magic.
