SMALL - "CC"

Image
Photo by Lola Scott "CC" is a sex song, plain and simple. The latest from Atlanta based "grunge-channeling feminist punks" have done the nearly impossible with their sex song. It's not leering, or dirty, or even shocking. Despite being a song that's undeniably a sex song, it's surprisingly sweet. Maybe even shockingly so. It's reminding me a lot of an artist like TORRES in that way, both in sound and tone. Of course, it's a bit more aggressive than you'd typically get with TORRES, so it adds more than a little of a band like The Gits into the mix. SMALL are quickly becoming one of the most intriguing bands around these parts lately, and we can't wait for their full length to come out this Friday. You can listen to "CC" below. Decathexis is due out September 30 on Triphouse Records. For more on SMALL, check out the band's Bandcamp . SMALL · CC

SMALL - "Coyote"

Image
Photo by Lola Scott I don't equate Atlanta with grunge, but SMALL could very well change that. The latest from the grunge punk quartet is this incredible out of control sounding noisy rocker that has an unexpected side filled with pop hooks. It's how catchy "Coyote" is that makes it truly great. As discordant as the song can be at times, it's going to suck you in to the point that it's guaranteed to get stuck in your head. The centerpiece of the song is Samm Severin's vocals. Severin's vocals go through almost the entire song in an almost spoken word rant that feels almost improvised in how raw and emotional it is. SMALL are doing something truly special with this one, and you're going to want to jump on board. In a press release, Samm Severin talks about her band: “Everything with SMALL is an aggrandizement of the feminine. The masculine is usually credited with being more proactive, aggressive, violent; but this is also inherent in the feminine e...

SMALL - "Better"

Image
Photo by Lola Scott Hailing from Atlanta, SMALL are described as a grunge-punk outfit. Once you hear "Better," that description is perfect. "Better" has all of the aggression and discordant sounds of both grunge and punk. The guitars may be a little more jangly than you would expect with grunge, but the drums are pounding as hard as anything from Seattle. It's a huge sound musically, but the true focus will be Samm Severin's vocals. Severin is pouring out her heart on this song and is putting more emotion into her vocals than you typically hear. It would be a painful listen if it wasn't so compelling and "Better" wasn't such a fantastic song.  You can listen to "Better" below. Decathexis is due out September 30 on Triphouse Records.
