Bush Tetras - "Bird on a Wire"

Image
Photo by Steve Godis New York City post-punk legends Bush Tetras have released another new single before the release of their album later this month. "Bird on a Wire" is a song that is both oddly noisy and melodic. The vocals are more along the lines of mid-90's post-grunge/bubble grunge kind of sound. They're very melodic and lean a bit into pop. Musically, "Bird on a Wire" sound a bit like a more mellow version of The Jesus Lizard with a little bit of a dub stutter at times. It's an interesting dichotomy for the song that might not work for everyone, but a band like Bush Tetras isn't exactly meant to work for everyone at all times. You can watch the video for "Bird on a Wire" below. They Live In My Head is due out July 28 on Wharf Cat Records, and is available for pre-order here . For more on Bush Tetras, check out the band on Facebook and Instagram . Upcoming tour dates are below the video. 9/15 - NY, NY @ LPR 9/29 - Philadelphia, PA @ ...

Bush Tetras - "They Live in My Head"

Image
Photo by C Godlis New York City post-punk legends Bush Tetras are back with the title track off their upcoming album. "They Live in My Head" starts off like one of those classic Stooges jam/freak out they basically used to fill out an album. And then the speed and the noise comes in for the chorus, although it's a little more power pop than you might have expected. It's the kind of song that's not quite as weird as you might expect, but it's far too weird to be even remotely mainstream... although it kind of is. It's a jangly mess of a song, and I mean that as a compliment. For the second time today, I'm going to refer to a song as both punk and trippy. You can listen to "They Live in My Head" below. The Steve Shelley produced  They Live in My Head  is due out July 27 on Wharf Cat Records. For more on Bush Tetras, Check out the band on Facebook and Bandcamp .

Bush Tetras - "Things I Put Together"

Image
Photo by Steve Godlis Bush Tetras are one of those bands I need to spend more time with. The legendary New York City band formed in 1979 and are one of the most influential post-punk, No Wave, and alternative bands out there. They're set to release their first album in eleven years, and the first since the death of drummer Dee Pop's death in 2021. Filling in on drums is Steve Shelley, formerly of Sonic Youth, who is also acting as producer for the album. The first single is "Things I Put Together," and it's great. Singer Cynthia Sley has an almost pop sound to her vocals (of course, more of a late 70's pop than a modern version) which goes in stark contrast to the screeching guitars. This song is just filled out with the kind of fuzzed out guitars that helped define the genres that Bush Tetras helped start. If you're a diehard fan or just discovering these legends, you're going to enjoy this one. You can listen to "Things I Put Together" belo...

GracieHorse - "If You're Gonna Walk That Straight Line Son, It's Only Gonna Hurt"

Image
Photo by Giraffe Studios Los Angeles based singer/songwriter GracieHorse has a new single out that has a very L.A. vibe to it. "If You're Gonna Walk That Straight Line Son, It's Only Gonna Hurt" has that countrified Americana sound you only can ever seem to get out of southern California. It's a modern take on 70's AM radio rock that slightly dipped into country. Plus, there is some great 90's indie rock meets Neil Young style guitar solos throughout the song, and the universe needs as many of those as possible. And I haven't even mentioned GracieHorse's vocals. She just has this ultracool sound to her voice that perfectly mixes 70's cool with 90's slacker cool. This entire song has a perfect vibe and sound that you're going to become enamored with more each time you listen. You can watch the video for "If You're Gonna Walk That Straight Line Son, It's Only Gonna Hurt" below. L.A. Shit is due out May 19 on Wharf Cat Re...

Dougie Poole - "Beth David Cemetery"

Image
Photo by Bug Carrasco There are a lot of artists doing the classic country thing these days, but Dougie Poole is doing it just a little differently. The Brooklyn artist's latest single, "Beth David Cemetey," has all of the twang required for an old time country sound, but Poole just sounds a little... different. The song has a little bit of Brooklyn indie rock in it. While most classic sounding country sounds Southern, "Beth David Cemetery" sounds more Northern. It might sound impossible for a country song to sound this Big City, but this one does.  Dougie Poole says of the new song: "Beth David is the cemetery in Queens where my Mom’s side of the family is buried. I’ve lost a lot of people in the past 10 years or so - not just family, friends too. Maybe that’s just what getting older feels like. Adding names to a list that only gets longer. So I wanted to write a joyful, messy, kinda boozy, kinda hungover song about going to a funeral. I wanted to capture ...

Lily Konigsberg - "Proud Home"

Image
The latest from Lily Konigsberg is an oddball little pop song. "Proud Home" sounds a lot like modern day alt-pop. It's light, and fun, and seems like a killer song to have your own little dance to. But, the song is also filled with mid-90's style power pop alt-rock guitar. It's that weird crunchy guitar that seems just slightly off tune that basically soundtracked my college years. "Proud Home" is decidedly more pop than rock, but there is a lot here for aged 90's hipsters to love. Lily Konigsberg explains the inspiration of her new song (which sonically explains everything): " This song was inspired by a fictional story I made up in my dreams about my mom being Stacy's mom .  It's a song dedicated to Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne, who passed away from Covid at the very beginning of the pandemic. I have always loved Stacy’s Mom so much and after his death, realized he wrote a ton of his songs that I really love. Appreciation for...

Lily Konigsberg - "That's the Way I Like It"

Image
Photo by Felix Walworth Palberta's Lily Konigsberg is set to release a solo album in October, and she's released a new single from that album. "That's the Way I Like It" is an impossibly upbeat sounding single. It's as poppy as indie rock can get before it transitions to pop. It's a bouncy song with fuzzy and chunky guitars. Also, Konigsberg's vocals keep it from being too pop. Her vocals are lovely, but not quite pop lovely. Her voice sounds more like mid 90's indie rock/power pop vocals. "That's the Way I Like It" is an endlessly fun indie rocker, which is a genre not normally associated with fun. In a press release, Lily Konigsberg explains her new single: " I said 'I’m going to write a song now' to my friend and then wrote this song in 20 minutes .  The chords are symmetrical so it’s really fun to play on guitar. It's a fucking catchy and sassy song about getting what I want when I deserve it. Not whatever I want....

Palberta - "Corner Store"

Image
Photo by Chloe Carrasco Every now and then you hear a song from a new band (just one single song), and you become completely obsessed with that band. The latest example of that for us is Palberta's "Corner Store." The New York City trio have been releasing music since 2015, but they've somehow slipped by us unnoticed. "Corner Store" has changed all that. The song reminds me of early that dog mixed with later that dog. It has the gorgeous three part harmonies mixed with a 90's indie rock aesthetic. It's the smooth sounds from Retreat From the Sun combined with the rawness of their 1994 debut album. Somehow Palberta are making harmonies punk, and we love them for that. You can watch the video for "Corner Store" below. Palberta5000 , the upcoming album from Palberta, will be out January 22 on Wharf Cat Records. You can pre-order the album here . Public Practice - "Fate/Glory"

Image
Photo by Colin Sussingham & Josie Keefe The new single from New York's Public Practice might be my favorite thing we've brought you in months. "Fate/Glory" brings you the groove of our favorite post punk songs in a very Talking Heads/Gang of Four way. It also has this sense of fun, almost like a disco party is threatening to break out at any moment. There is also the slightest hints of riot grrrl towards the end, in a sense of noise and menace. So if you want your post punk to be both a fun 70's party and somewhat terrifying, you'll need to check out "Fate/Glory." You can listen to "Fate/Glory" below. Public Practice's debut EP, Distance is a Mirror , will be out October 26 on Wharf Cat Records. You can pre-order a copy here . Live dates are below the song. Thu. Aug. 23 - Brooklyn, NY @ Elsewhere Rootop (PopGun 10 Year Anniversary Party) Wed. Sept. 12 - Brooklyn, NY @ The Glove (w/ Bambara) Fri. Oct. 5 - Brooklyn, NY @ Musi...

Holy Motors - "Honeymooning"

Image
Photo by Kertin Vasser This may be one of the most unique tracks we've brought you in a long time. Hailing from Estonia, which is unique enough, Holy Motor are described as "... a five-piece twang and reverb band," which is shockingly accurate. "Honeymooning" somehow combines shoegaze with cowboy guitars in one of the moodiest and foreboding songs you've heard in years. The whole song sounds like it's being listened to from miles away through a hazy dustbowl filter. Plus, for a band with three guitars, "Honeymooning" is shockingly minimalist. Three guitars is normally a wall of sound that slams into you face first, but Holy Motors use them to creep up on you and make you feel awkward. You can listen to "Honeymooning" below. The debut album from Holy Motors, Slow Sundown , will be out February 9 on Wharf Cat Records. You can pre-order a copy here . For more on Holy Motors, check them out on Facebook .
