Festival Preview: July Edition

Last week we previewed upcoming music festivals in June, so this week we're taking a look at July. It's a little more quiet festival wise than other months, but that may be a good thing seeing what the temperatures can be like in July. The options are still great, so let's take a look!

Levitate Music and Arts Festival

July 5-7

Marshfield Fairgrounds, Marshfield, MA

Taking place over Fourth of July weekend (which is both good and bad), Levitate tends to lean towards the more hippie/jam band side of things than we do, but there is still a lot for us to like. It features the first New England appearance of the current version of Sublime (I'm always torn on how to feel about Sublime since I used to love them before Brad Nowell's death, but current fans turn me away from them), Jon Muq, Lake Street Dive, G. Love and Special Sauce, and more! It's a long running festival I haven't made it to yet, but I know people that go religiously.

Mountain Day

July 20

Bousquet Mountain, Pittsfield, MA

A smaller, one day festival taking place in the extreme western part of Massachusetts, Mountain day takes place on Bousquet Mountain. (Seriously, more music festivals should take place at ski resorts in the summer.) It's on the folkier side of music, and features local artists The Whiskey Treaty Roadhow, Bella's Bartok, Love Crumbs, and more. Sometimes smaller can be better, and Mountain Day looks like a perfect way to spend a July afternoon/evening.

Nice, a fest

July 25-28

Davis Square, Somerville, MA

Nice, a fest just keeps getting bigger and better every year. This year's festival once again takes place primarily between Crystal Ballroom at Somerville Theater and The Rockwell in Davis Square, Somerville, and has expanded to an outdoor stage in the Grove Street Parking lot for Saturday. The festival specializes in booking artists with local ties, and they've booked something like eighty local artists over four days! It's an amazing line up and features If It's Too Loud... favorites like Hannah Mohan, Mallcops, Palehound, Pile, Model/Actriz, Sweet Petunia, Noble Dust, TIFFY, Burp., Hell Beach, JVK, Vivid Blook, and many, many more! It's an extraordinary amount of bands, but Nice, a fest still feels like a small local club show. It's just a very, very long one.
