Webb Chapel - "Springtime"

In this heatwave we're experiencing in the Northeast, Springtime feels like it was years ago, but we still love the latest single from Webb Chapel. The Philadelphia band just released "Springtime," and it's a deliriously noisy old timey indie rock song. It feels and sounds like an updated version of Sonic Youth's mid 80's sound. It's heavy on the low end with a certain menace to it, but with much more pop sounding vocals than anything SY ever released. The instrumentation just has a dark sound to it, and it feels like anything could happen at any time. "Springtime" is going to have some serious appeal for fans of early indie/college rock, and for anyone that likes more than a little feedback.

Vocalist/bassist Rachel Gordon says of the band's latest single:

"When Zack [Claxton] sent over his home recorded demo, it was already called 'Springtime,' which sparked a theme of life and renewal in my mind. My experiences as a grave gardener at Woodlands cemetery further shaped the lyrics, imagining the life of Mary Brown through her garden. The lyrics are basically me trying to imagine this lady as a whole person with multiple roles in her life, while trying to tend to her garden and hoping she's happy with it.”

You can listen to "Springtime" below. World Cup is due out September 6 on Strange Mono Records, with proceeds going to Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). It's available for pre-order through Bandcamp. For more on Webb Chapel, check out the band on Instagram.
