Kim Deal - "Coast"

Not only did we not expect a new Kim Deal solo single this week, we certainly didn't expect it to be partially inspired by "Margaritaville." Deal wrote the song back in 2020 after going to a friend's wedding where the band, The Grape Whizzers, played a cover of the iconic Jimmy Buffet song with "... revelatory levels of low self-esteem." The song also dates back to 2020 when Deal stayed off-season in Nantucket, despite the fact that, as she says, "I hate the sun, beach and watersports."

"Coast" is like a bizarro beach jam. It has all of the elements of a classic surf/summer song (including horns from Chicago's Mucca Pazza), but just not in that joyous summer way. It's a laid back indie rock song that might inspire you to sit on the beach, but only while hiding under an umbrella. "Coast" might be the greatest non-summery summer song of all time.

You can listen to "Coast" below. The song was Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in Chicago, and is available via 4AD. For more on Kim Deal, check out the artist's website.
