First Listen: New Releases for 11 and 18 October 2024

Artist : Orla Gartland Album : Everybody Needs a Hero Quick Thoughts : Apparently Orla Gartland is kind of big? Not sure when that happened, as I loved Woman on the Internet and, uh, apparently everyone else did, too. This is absolutely a step up either way, a little more mainstream, a little more produced, but it's still a ton of fun whatever way you slice it. "Little Chaos" in particular is a real winner this week, so check it out. Songs of Note : "Sound of Letting Go," "Little Chaos," "Backseat Driver," "Late to the Party," "Three Words Away" Artist : Kylie Minogue Album : Tension II Quick Thoughts : Kylie Minogue continues her exemplary third act with Tension II , a tight package of dancefloor tunes that just absolutely crush it from start to finish. She's riding high after "Padam Padam" last year, and there's just so much here to love. I don't honestly know why she's not up t...

The Linda Lindas - "No Obligation"

Image
Photo by Jessie Cowan The Linda Lindas have been moving away from the raw punk of "Stupid Racist Boy" and towards a more pop sound with the singles off their upcoming album. That is, until the release of "No Obligation." This new song is their most punk song yet, with Eloise Wong adopting a guttural growl on the verses. The chorus turns a little more pop, with gang vocals taking over and adding a slight harmony to the song. There are even some Dead Kennedys-esque guitars throughout "No Obligation." This one is going to make even the most die hard classic Epitaph Records fans satisfied. The Linda Lindas say of their latest single: “Eloise wrote this ripper because we won’t adhere to what anyone else thinks we should sound like or who they think we are. We don’t make music out of obligation— we make music out of love. And we’re so grateful for all of the opportunities music has given us, like going to Japan and making this video with a team including Naoko f...

The Linda Lindas featuring "Weird Al" Yankovic - "Yo Me Estreso"

Image
Photo by Jessie Cowan The Linda Lindas continue to grow their sound at an incredible rate. Their latest single, "Yo Me Estreso," is a punked up version of corridos tumbados, and the result is amazing. You'd never know that this was the same band that went viral with "Racist, Sexist Boy" just two years ago. While we (and everyone) loved the original sound of The Linda Lindas, their sound has grown so quickly and impressively that we can't help but love the quartet even more. Plus, "Yo Me Estreso" features "Weird Al" Yankovic on accordion, and who doesn't want to hear The Linda Lindas and "Weird Al" playing music together?  Bela Salazar says of the band's latest single: “ ‘Yo Me Estreso’ is a song about always being stressed, always being anxious and thinking that people are mad at you when they really aren't.  It was inspired by listening to a lot of corridos tumbados, banda and Duranguense and doing that in our own p...

The Linda Lindas - "All In My Head"

Image
Photo by Jessie Cowan Everyone's favorite viral sensation indie rock/punk band The Linda Lindas are back with new music. "All In My Head" might be the most poppy thing the quartet have released to date. It's much more along the lines of guitar heavy indie pop, and is kind of a cross of Alvvays and the poppier side of Mannequin Pussy. It's an infectious and fun track that, if we have any complaint, may be a little too much of an earworm. "All In My Head" is such a sonic delight that it's guaranteed to not leave your subconscious for days to come. Lucia de la Garza says of her band's latest single: “I wrote ‘All In My Head,’ from the perspective of a book character, which kinda brought us out of our comfort zone.  It felt like a break from reality, which we don’t usually find ourselves writing about.” You can watch the video for "All In My Head" below. No Obligation is due out October 11 on Epitaph Records, and is available for pre-order ...

The Linda Lindas Cover The Music Explosion

Image
Photo by Jessie Cowan The Linda Lindas continue to prove that they're more than just that band of teenagers who rocked out in a viral video. The band's latest single is a cover of The Music Explosion's "Little Bit O' Soul" for the new film Totally Killer. It might seem weird to cover a song from 1967 for a movie that takes place in the 1980's, but considering how prevalent music from the 60's was in 80's movies, it makes perfect sense. The original song is a laid back soul song through a garage rock prism, and The Linda Lindas keep that same vibe on theirs... mostly. Their version of "Little Bit O' Soul" is punked up and a little noisier, but it's exactly as much fun as you'd expect from The Linda Lindas. You can listen to The Linda Lindas' version of "Little Bit O' Soul" below. For more on The Linda Lindas, check out the band's website . Upcoming tour dates are below the song. 10/10 - Red Rocks Amphithea...

The Linda Lindas - "Resolution/Revolution"

Image
Photo by Jessie Cowan With each new song, The Linda Lindas prove they are worthy of all of the hype and are more than just a viral sensation. The band's new single, "Resolution/Revolution," completely expands on their sound, and shows off a completely new side. The song is heavier than anything they've released so far, while still being unbelievably catchy and fun. That could be since even though the song leans into metal, it also leans towards New Wave. Not many bands could pull off such disparate sounds into something this cohesive, but apparently no one bothered to tell them it couldn't be done. The Linda Lindas say of their latest single: “ Bela had been rocking out to a lot of Pantera and Judas Priest when we started writing 'Resolution/Revolution.' She came in with a riff and as we worked together, it morphed into composition about making small dents in big problems to make a difference in the long run. We’ve been playing the song live for a few week...

The Linda Lindas - "Too Many Things"

Image
Photo by Jessie Cowan They may have just released their debut album almost exactly a year ago, but The Linda Lindas are already back with a new single. If you were thinking they might have burned out on the hype of last year's Growing Up , "Too Many Things" shows the quartet are just getting started. This new single showcases a songwriting talent barely touched in anything you've heard before. "Too Many Things" has just enough of an edge to squeak into punk territory, but there is such a fantastic blend of alt-rock and pop here to keep the song ridiculously fun. It's kind of like a cross between Juliana Hatfield and The Donnas. If you've been fighting hopping on The Linda Lindas bandwagon, it's time to stop resisting. You can watch the video for "Too Many Things" below. The single is out now via Epitaph Records. For more on The Linda Lindas, check out the band's website . Upcoming tour dates are below the video. 5/27 - Atlantic City...
