Ken's Best of 2023 - #10: David Wax Museum - You Must Change Your Life

Image
If you've been paying attention to David Wax Museum for the past few years, you'll know that they've been talking about having a great album in the can that they were just waiting to release when they felt they could truly tour behind it and promote it properly. That album is You Must Change Your Life , and it's truly a culmination of David Wax Museum's recent sound experimentation as they've moved away from the traditional Mexican folk of 2011's Everything is Saved and 2009's Carpenter Bird to a more modern folk sound (along with some experimentation.) Sometimes an album sounds like a band is trying to make a big, hit record, and that is certainly the case with You Must Change Your Life , but it still feels like an earnest release. David Wax Museum are a band I've been a huge fan of for a while. Since discovering them through the Newport Folk Festival and NPR way back in 2010, this is a band I feel a strong connection to. ("When You Are Still...

David Wax Museum - "Best Lover"

Photo by Meredith McKown You kind of expect a song called "Best Lover" to be at least a little mushy, and the latest from David Wax Museum definitely is. But that's part of the charm of the husband/wife duo. They can pull off a song like this and make it endearing. Out of the three songs they've released so far off of their upcoming album, "Best Lover" probably has the most mainstream/crossover appeal, edging fairly far into the pop side of folk pop. There's even a brief hip hop-esque breakdown in the song that is reminiscent of G. Love & Special Sauce. What could have been an overly hokey song ends up being a lot of fun. You can listen to "Best Lover" below. You Must Change Your Life is due out May 5 on Nine Mile Records, and can be pre-ordered here . For more on David Wax Museum, check out the artist's website .

David Wax Museum - "You Must Change Your Life"

Photo by Anthony Mulcahy We've been huge fans of David Wax Museum since well before we started this blog, and they're one of the bands we credit with inspiring us to start If It's Too Loud... It's always a thrill to bring you new music from the David and Suz, but this current round of new songs just feels special. The latest, "You Must Change Your Life," just feels like it's dying to explode into a crossover hit. This is the best the mainstream (and maybe even the pop side) of modern folk has to offer. It's an incredibly upbeat song that is practically begging to be danced to this summer in a field during one of the finer music festivals out there. Plus, the message of "You Must Change Your Life" is hitting me squarely in the middle of a mid-life crisis, so it's becoming a personal song for me, too. You can watch the video for "You Must Change Your Life" below. You Must Change Your Life , the album, is due out May 5 and can be p...

David Wax Museum - "Luanne"

If you've been a fan of David Wax Museum for a while, you'll know that there's an almost mythical unreleased album that they've been waiting to release until they felt they could fully tour behind it. Ok, it's not really mythical since they've talked about it a bunch, but we've been waiting for years to hear this album. The great news is that it's finally getting released. And, after hearing the first single off of this album, it's going to be great. "Luanne" is almost a thowback to when I first discovered David Wax Museum. It's a giant, celebratory song rooted in traditional folk while being more of a modern neo-folk song. Lately, they've been a little more quiet and even experimental. "Luanne" is a back to roots song that is just begging to be played at large outdoor shows this summer. If this is just the first taste of the album, we're thrilled we only have three more months to hear the rest! You can listen to ...
