Legendary indie rock musician Mary Timony is set to release her first new solo album in fifteen years, and just released a new single from it. "The Guest" is about as mainstream of a song as you're going to get from Timony. It's almost a pretty straightforward singer-songwriter track, and even includes a surprising amount of twang. But that's one of the things that sets "The Guest" apart from most mainstream leaning music of the day. As country sounding as the twang is, something about it just seems a little non-country, which won't make sense until you're listening to it. Not many artists can make twang sound like it doesn't belong in a country song, but Timony pulls it off.
Mary Timony says of her new single:
“I was imagining loneliness as a house guest who keeps knocking on your door. I thought it would be funny to say loneliness is the only one who always comes back.”
You can watch the video for "The Guest" below. Untame the Tiger is due out February 23 on Merge Records, and is available for pre-order here. For more on Mary Timony, check out the artist's website. Upcoming tour dates are below the video.
