Live Shows: Modern Nature, Brigid Dawson & The Mothers Network, and Jake McKelvie, The Rockwell, Somerville, MA 1/13/26
We like to think we do a pretty good job of bringing you new music, but every so often we do drop the ball. After seeing Modern Nature play The Rockwell Tuesday night, I can safely say we massively missed out on their excellent 2025 album The Heat Warps.
Coming all the way from Cambridge, UK, Modern Nature took the tiny stage of The Rockwell in front of a decent crowd and quite simply blew everyone in attendance away. Usually when we say that, we are speaking about volume, or aggression, or noise. Instead, Modern Nature play a fairly quiet and mellow blend of indie rock. It was along the lines of Sonic Youth or Slint... just much more chill. Of curse, chill and mellow don't have to mean boring or not intense. Modern Nature's songs are rather intense despite how laid back their playing is. If you've never heard their single "Pharoh," do yourself a favor and check it out. It's an absolute masterpiece. Modern Nature were at their best when Jack Cooper and Tara Cunningham were vocalizing together. Something about their harmonizing was pure magic.
Brigid Dawson & The Mothers Network played before Modern Nature. Turns out The Mothers Network are Modern Nature playing double duty as the former Thee Oh Sees member. She fit right in with her tourmates, also playing a laid back version of indie rock, albeit with much more psychedelia in place. Playing in a winter jacket (The Rockwell was oddly cold Tuesday night), Dawson captivated the audience with her set. She sounds like a DIY/indie version of 60's psychedelic pop, and that fits right in with what we love here.
Local Worcester based Jake McKelvie opened up the evening with a short solo set. He was added last minute, which I was excited about. I've been a fan for a while, and the only time I've made it to a show was when he and The Countertops played at my local bar/restaurant to a crowd more interested in their nachos than live music. He plays a perfect mixture of indie rock and folk/Americana with clever lyrics that are funny without being jokey. His set was a nice surprise, and I'll need to get out to see him much more often.
