The Odyssey Cult - "The Yeti's Eyes"

When you see a band called The Odyssey Cult, and a single titled "The Yeti's Eyes," you kinda know what you're in for. However, The Odyssey Cult is a supergroup featuring Ethan Miller of Howlin Rain, Ben Flashman of Comets on Fire, Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth, Anthony Taibi of Carlton Melton, Brigid Dawson of Osees, Paula Frazer of Tarnation, Inna Showalter of Magic Fig, and Zoh Amba. The group's latest single, "The Yeti's Eyes," is a rough and tumble version of psychedelic, experimental garage rock. It's a noisy and swirling track that's both lush and ragged. The song charges towards the listener, barely under control... but that's a great thing in the hands of these musicians. This is what the Stooges could have sounded like if they formed in San Francisco and not Detroit.

Ethan Miller (guitar, loops, vocal) says of the band's sound:

“I hear bits and pieces of all our groups over the years in there like a witch’s cauldron boiling about; a little Comets On Fire eyeball floating up, a little Heron Oblivion foam frothing, a burnt hairy Feral Ohms hoof rolling to the surface and back down. And the same is true with all the others and their past work; a little Sonic Youth spice here, a little Tarnation spice there. We didn’t intend it to be that way, but I guess in retrospect how could it not be that way? I suppose it’s this loose travel trunk of DNA we all bring to the table. I find it rather joyful to hear those fractured bits of mirrors go by in a new, previously unimagined context.”

This new single might be the most classically shoegaze song they've released to date. It sounds like it could be a lost song from the Loveless sessions. It's filled with a heavy wall of fuzz and lumbers along at a midtempo pace. As always, Aislinn Ritchie's vocals have a slight pop sheen to them, even if they tend to take a backseat to the music surrounding her. This mixed with the absolutely punishing drums throughout "all tied up" make it a heavy shoegaze instant masterpiece. "Sex and Money" is this perfect mix of all the phases of Loveless' career. It has the twang of her earlier alt-country classics, the noise and punk that has always been front and center during live shows, and the more pop side that has been on more recent albums. "Sex and Money" could be a trainwreck of a song, but Loveless has melded these genres into this perfectly structured song. Julien Baker & TORRES - "Tuesday"

Photo by Ebru Yildiz Julien Baker and TORRES teaming up for a country album is one of the true joys of 2025. The pair's latest single, "Tuesday," is fronted by TORRES, and according to the press release is about "... trying to overcome and heal from the guilt, shame and religious abuse that so many people experience discovering their identity and growing up Queer." The song is a twangy, laid back country track that lands somewhere between classic country and modern pop music (but nowhere near the current country pop sound). I'm not typically a lyrics guy and don't normally pay attention to the lyrics of a song until after multiple listens, but the lyrics of "Tuesday" grabbed me immediately upon the first listen.
