With a name like Great American Canyon Band, you'd expect country, or bluegrass, or any other genre underneath the Americana umbrella. But "You Were the One" isn't even remotely a folk song. Instead the husband and wife duo have released a new single that is more Mazzy Star than Newport Folk, albeit a version of Mazzy Star that is somehow both more pop and darker. "You Were the One" has a surprising dark intensity to it, and as it builds and builds it gets darker and more poppy. There are elements of the song that lean towards goth, and other elements that lean towards the more mainstream, but all while sticking to the dream pop foundation of the song.
You can watch the video (which is made up entirely of clips from Night of the Living Dead) below. For more on Great American Canyon Band, check out the artist's website.
