Satya Covers Lucinda Williams

Oakland native Satya has a new single out, and it's simply a must listen for all fans of either Americana or soul. She's released a cover of Lucinda Williams' excellent "Fruits of My Labor." While this version is quite faithful to the original, Satya's cover is a little more stripped back and soulful. It's warmer than the original, and is infused with a sense of nostalgia that can't possibly be missed. This version of "Fruits of My Labor" is a perfect summer song, and just feels Southern (even though Satya is from California). This is the type of cover that's going to make you want to go back and listen to Lucinda Williams' catalog and dive straight into Satya's, as well.

Satya says of her cover of "Fruits of My Labor":

“The first time I heard ‘Fruits of My Labor,’ I was in a dive bar in New Orleans. It was so loud in the bar, and my friend was talking to me, but the second the song came on, it felt like it cut straight through to me. I went home and immediately looked it up, read all the lyrics and CRIED.


"The way I interpret the song is like writing to a past love about where you are now in your life. Lucinda's lyrics helped me learn how to hold my own two truths at once. Learning to let it all go and move forward, and yet still finding the beauty of someone you loved in the past, finding traces of them in the present even when they’re no longer there.”

"Fishnets" features verses from Bbymutha, SHA RAY, and August Fanon, and has an intense and almost menacing vibe, despite being an absolute banger of a track. It's hypnotic and immediately grabs your attention, and if you're unfamiliar with the trio of rappers on the song, you're sure to start pulling up their bodies of work. Liam Kazar - "Shoes Too Tight"

Photo by Alexa Viscius This may be Liam Kazar's debut single, but the Chicago based musician already has an impressive resume, having worked with Jeff Tweedy, Chance the Rapper, Steve Gunn, Daniel Johnston, and others. "Shoes Too Tight" features childhood friend Spencer Tweedy on drums, Lane Beckstrom on bass, and Ohmme on vocals. It's an absurdly fun and groovy little song that is a party waiting to happen. What he gives us here is a timeless song that could truly have been released any time since the 1960's (ok... maybe not the 80's...) There are elements of classic rock, 60's crooners and R&B, indie rock, modern Americana... it's really just packed with everything in a cohesive song that maintains the vibe the entire way through. Artist : COWBOY BOY Album : GOOD GIRL Quick Thoughts : While I don't know how I tripped up on COWBOY BOY, but it takes a lot for me not to be into a power pop band, and thus they charmed me from the very start. This is a quick hit album without any real negatives to point out - the vocals are great, the songs are fun while still being somewhat serious, and the whole package is a really solid listen from beginning to end.
